Hurricane Rita evacuee has Camry problem... need help
My wife and I had to evacuate our home in Baytown, Texas because of Hurricane Rita on Friday morning of last week. We travelled to Austin, Texas where my daughter and her husband lives. All is well here, except, that my 91 Camry LE is having an unusual idling problem. The car has 180k miles on it and has automatic trans. I am a bit concerned about this because of the 200 mile trip I have to make back home in the next day or so.
The car idles very roughly when I turn the ac on. When the ac is off, the idling is better. Additionally, the car seems to be running with a little less power. I have checked the plug wires to make sure that they are firmly attached.. and they all were. Additionally, I checked the wires to make sure they were showing fire with use of my inductive timing light. Additionally, I changed out the wires last year with OEM wires.
One more thing... I notice this afternoon that the auxiliary fan that turns on when the ac is on was not running. With some looking around, I found that one of the wires to this fan was disconnected. Once I connected it, the fan ran.
I would appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks.
Check your vaccum hoses. There should be a device that ups the idle when the AC is on. I know that on some Toyotas it is located on the AC amplifier under the glove box.
Try doing some regular maintenance. See if the air filter is clogged, clean the throttle body and butterfly, just make sure everything is clean of grim. Fuel filter could be dirty as well...there's so many little things, but these are the easiest things to check.

that and also PCV valve
do a search for PCV valve.
My family also owns a 91 camry and I know exactly what your talking about. It is loaded with miles, somewhere around 300k, and it has done the same thing since we've had it. My dad still drives it to work in Huntsville that is a round trip of 85 miles a day. It shouldnt go dead or anything. It will idle so low that the seats jump but it has never quit running. The only time it quit running was when it lost its ground somehow, and that two weeks to figure out.
So after you reconnected the wire for the fan, did anything improve? Did you have a lot of things in the car loading it down? That might cause lack of power.
Make sure everything is connected, vac hoses etc. Clean the TB also.
When did you experience the power and idle start to decline? As in right when you started the drive, midway, once you arrived, or the next day when you started it?
evacuee was in the title to give readers the level of importance for him and his family to make it back home asap. Good luck, hope everything is ok at home too.

low idle speed mostly has to do with the IAC (idle speed control valve). i had a similar problem on my 97 camry le. The iac valve gets accumulated with dirt thus affecting its performance. it is located under the TB (throttle body) on a 97 and must be located on the same place on a 91. there is an opening inside the TB for the iac valve. spray some carb cleaner into the opening and start the engine. the engine will hesitate but will start. spray generously into the opening with the engine running and reviving otherwise the engine will stall. if this does not solve the problem then may be its the egr valve
