'Clean up' front rotors?

I'll be replacing the front brake pads on my 96 Carmy for the first time. Car has 88K miles and still has some pad left. Rotors are clean with no deep grooves or signs of being over-heated. The old school in me says to put the rotors on a brake lathe and true them up. Others say its not neccessary.

I have a 94 and was going to ask exactly that same question. When I had a Honda, they were very specific about not turning the rotors, but I did it anyway and it worked out fine.

I would put the pads on with out doing anything to the rotors. Worst case is you might wear the new pads out a little quicker. By turning the rotors you risk getting brake pulsation from them being to thin. Next time you get ready to do brakes probably figure on replacing the rotors.

as long as they are not too thin always have ur rotors turned, the new brakes will wear more evenly extending the life a bit and reliabilty of them. If the rotors are too thin to be turned or nearing that point, simply replace them, they are not that expensive

if you do not turn or replace them you can have more problems than normal with brake squeak also. You may also get some other noises and such. It is not going to be detremental to the operation of the brakes or anything like that jsut be forewarned about it.

The rotors have never been turned - but I like the idea of knocking off a few thousands of a inch so the new pads seat well. Anyone know the minimum thickness allowable? I'am aware of too thin rotors and warping.

Whenever I do my pads I get my rotors turned.

It lessens future problems with uneven wear patterns

Minimum should be stamped on the inside of the rotor hub. if they have been on there that long you may need to scrape a little rust off to read it though.
