I am going to guess that you have about 200,000 miles and have not changed the fluid every 30,000 miles. That is kind of where I was when I began to address mine. If that is the case, EVERYTHING THAT I SUGGEST HERE COULD CAUSE YOUR TRANSMISSION TO FAIL COMPLETELY so these are last resort items. Before you start trying to fix this you might want to check out who you want to rebuild or replace it in case this trashes out your car. If you will need to do it quickly, it ain't cheap.
I would not flush your transmission, too many possible problems with agitating crud and forcing chunks into passages that shouldn't be blocked.
You might try changing transmission fluid by draining from the pan drain and replacing fluid two quarts at a time for 10 or 15 times. For the first 10 quarts I pumped 1 quart at a time out the fill tube and replaced it. Later, I dropped the pan and replaced the screen and started on 2 quart changes. I would use one of the new fluids for older transmissions (I use Valvoline's MAX Life). This is the method that I used and it seems to be working. Just in case, I kept the old fluid to add back in case the transmission slipped more because the particles were removed. Weird but that"s just me.
Next, about 2 weeks ago, I added a can of transmission additive (Cargo's Transmission Conditioner/Cleaner). I have high hopes that it will restore flexibility to the rubber parts and clean out any varnish deposits gently.
I am considering some method of letting the transmission pump out fluid while gravity feeding new fluid to it. I don't want to use pressure. There are several commercial options but I haven't gotten to where I trust any of them yet.
I am trying to approach this in stages. In the beginning I envisioned that there were particles, varnish and general crud in the passageways actually helping to seal up any gaps in the moving pieces. I figured that by slowly replacing the fluid I wouldn't cause any major change. As my fluid cleaned up I used more aggressive methods. So far, so good. I don't notice the slipping as much (wishful thinking??). I am changing my fluid much more often. You can only drain 2 quarts at a time out of the pan and the system holds about 12 quarts.
Good luck,
Kep
