3rd Generation troubleshooting problems

First, i Have a 95 camry, automatic 4 cylinder. anyway, most of the time, when i first start it, it makes a really loud sound, like metal bouncing against metal. The sound will increase with the revs of the engine until it is revving at about 4000, then it cuts out and wont start again until the engine is shutoff and restarted. Also, where is the transmission fluid check area, and the fill area? Thanks

not sure about the sound as it could be many things but the trans dipstick is located on the right side of the engine bay. Look at the right hand side of the radiator then go straight back there should be a dipstick there with a clip on it to hold it in. Probably gonna be orange in color. This is the right hand side as you ar standing in front of the car.

Since you say the noise goes away when it is heated up maybe it has something to do withteh exhaust, you will find that a lot of times the heat shelds will rattle until hot or you may have some kind of exhaust leak taht foes away when heated up. Does it make the noise with the a/c on or off or doesnt matter. Could be the water pump going out. could be not getting oil to the top end. There are many things it could be. You might want to have someone start th car and listen under the hood to see if you can pinpoint the location of the noise then come bask to us with some more info.

First, i didnt think about it at the time, so let me elaborate. The sound only occurs when the engine is first put into a gear, either reverse or any of the drive gears, not park or neutral. And when in the driving gears, it will go away if the engine is revved up sharply. Also, where can i purchase the flex pipe that connects the exhaust between the engine and the rest of the system, that little mesh thing, i had an exhaust leak, and i think that is the reason. Thanks.

as for the flex pipe you can obviously go to the dealer or you may try some local muffler and exhaust shops to see what they can do for you.

NOw to the noise does it seem to be coming from the transmission or the engine itself. If it is only doing it when you put it in gear that seems a little strange. is it more of a grinding noise or a knock.

I dont know where the noise is coming from, i'll get my dads stethoscope in the next couple of days and try, but the noise sounds like it is just a piece of hollow metal banging against something else.

I'm agreeing with cyorke with this one...if it's coming from outside the car, it's most likely the exhaust- some shielding probably got bent and is touching the exhaust or something, or maybe a hanger is slightly loose

get somebody to sit inside the car and rev slightly while you keep and eye/ear out ouside of the car
