3rd Generation Hi... ? on 5s-fe cam timing advance.

Hey,

My first post. A couple of questions on cam timing for a '92 5s-fe powered Camry. If I were to slip the timing belt one notch on the cam cog, so the cams were advanced one tooth ahead of the crank, would I notice any power gains or do any harm to the motor? Would I also have to re-set the ignition timing?

I have done some measuring on the cam cog and it seems that each tooth notch is 7.5degrees. So I would be advancing both the intake and exhaust valves 7.5deg. Might give some more low-mid range power. I rarely run over 4000rpm anyway.

What do you all think? I have searched these forums over and over but never found this question asked about the 5s-fe.

THANKS!
Karl

Can't say if it'll do any good or bad. Never tried it before.

Yes, the ignition timing will be off since the distributor is driven by the intake cam.

my 3vz-fe is advanced quite a bit and no harm done that i notice, for awhile i had a big power problem, then i realized i forgot to change the distributor location. woops . Ur engine will sound different, if it seems much louder after u do it...thats probably a bad thing as u most likely will not move when u step on the gas because of poor timing, jsut step it back a notch if it cant be fixed via distributor. Also i notice with my chng in timing, at an idle or when i take my foot off the pedal and the rpms steadily drop it has almost a back fire kind of sound, not loud, almost like a stutter periodically? if urs does the same, not to worry. make sure it doesnt do it a lot though. as for power gains...i def noticed a gain, however my engine is very unique and also a v-6, so u may or may not? try it out, the worst that will probably happen is less power or ur car just not starting at all, but thats easy to fix...

Bare in mind that while each tooth is spaced 7.5 degrees a part, you'll be moving 15 degrees since you can't move one tooth without moving the other. 15 degree increments isn't the greatest idea.

For what it's worth, my builder and I may be making adjustable camshaft pulleys to properly 'dial in', your camshaft timing. It won't allow you to advance them asyncronously, but you can correct any minor imperfections which will be good for anyone looking to get new cams.

In a couple days or so I'll likely be doing a write-up on my car. My head has just had all the machine work finished on it and is awaiting valve springs and a solution for the shims getting thrown out when it's hand-cranked. (well, not looking for the solution, we're looking for a shimless bucket conversion).
