Vented exhaust fumes dangerous?

I have an emissions problem on my camry. Code P0446, which says there is a vent control malfunction with the EVAP system--could be a multitude of problems causing this code to come up, but long story short it vents exhaust vapors out of the gas cap instead of flitering them out. What I want to know is, can these fumes be dangerous? They're quite strong...not inside the car, but if I roll the windows down then it gets bad.

Well, I know about CO poisoning. I was thinking more along the lines of combustion due to static electricity, or anything else. I do have a bad O2 sensor, but that's causing another code entirely to come up. According to the Haynes manual, P0446 is because of:
  • Open or Short in VSV circuit for EVAP
  • Problem with VSV for EVAP
  • Open or short in vapor pressure sensor circuit
  • Vapor pressure sensor circuit malfunction
  • Open or short in VSV circuit for vapor pressure circuit
  • Problem with vacuum hose (so it's not possible to recycle the vapors)
  • Charcoal canister malfunction
Could be any of those, maybe even a combination...regardless it's not something I want to mess with...I tried getting the darn canister off so I could check it, and I just gave up. Toyota couldn't have put it in a worse location.
