I own a '97 Camry. Recently, I had Toyota conduct a major service and tune-up on my car. Many engine parts were replaced and it cost me a bomb. Now, a new problem has arised. My automatic gearbox acts up. When I'm driving, the moment I ease up on the accelerator, the RPM takes a dip to around 1000rpm and then shoots back up to the right rpm. Its fine when I'm accelerating but the moment I try to slow down, this happens. Sometimes the rpm stays at 1000rpm until I press the accelerator again and this is regardless of the speed. Also, there's a slight lag in engine/gearbox response when the rpm takes a dip. Any idea on what's going on?
check idle air control. it may be sticking so that the moment that the tb butterfly closes it cannot activate quick enough making the rpm dip, then it opens and everythings normal.
go back to whoever repaired it and complain (you shoulve done this right away) if they introduced a problem, why bother waiting to get home and tell the world? turn around and go straight back.

BlueFusion6851,
My car has done about 207,000 km. That's why I had Toyota conduct the service and tune-up, something called "Maxcheck".
terrastrife,
That may well be the problem as the tune-up involved resetting and tuning the throttlebody. Maybe they made a mistake. There was no problem at all for the first few days since the service. The car was running like brand new, engine and gearbox was very smooth but a few days later I noticed the dip in rpm. Now it seems as if its getting worse everytime I drive the car.
One thing though, I sent it to a Toyota service centre, for the service and tune-up. It cost me an arm and a leg ( I think they took an extra toe too). I wonder how this could happen given Toyota's legendary service quality. I'm definitely gonna kick up a great big fuss about this when I can find the time to take it to take it to Toyota. They had my car for 5 days and now this.
I'd say the best place to go would be the Toyota Dealership. They can check EVERYTHING for you and you can choose to have it replaced/repaired or not. It's not gonna hurt you to go there.
