Tire rotation patterns

Currently rotating my own tires until I purchase next set and get the lifetime rotate/balance. I just switch the same side tires. What is the benefit from going to a C or B pattern illustrated on this page?

Each wheel position will have different wear patterns on the tires. These other methods help all the tires experience all patterns and attempt to keep wear even.
