Tire Sizing Help!

I just traded my 05 Runner Limited to a 08 Runner Limited.

The issue is the 05 had 17 inch wheels/tires and the 08 has 18 inch.

I have a set of Nokian winters that are 265/65R/17 that I want to use, but the stock size of the 08 is 264/60R/18.

I don't mind purchasing a set of rims to mount the winters on - is there any issues/problems if I drop down in size (from 18 to 17 inch) and use them on my new 4runner??

Thanks in advance!

Hello Trento,

Congrads on the new runner. Your 17" winter tires will work great on your new 08. They are actually the stock size for runners that come with 17" wheel and tires so you will be fine.

Keep in mind that your new 08 has TPMS sensors. The TPMS system is designed to keep you safe, not unlike your seat belt. It is recommended that you keep your TPMS system in working order at all times. With two sets of wheels and tires you will have a couple options. Some people buy a second set of Sensors for their winter wheels and tires, others swap their TPMS sensors twice a year. (some leave the sensors out of 1 wheel and tire package but this is not recommended)

We currently show two 17" wheels that are approved and will fit your 2008. Please let us know if you need any more help. Feel free to call us, we would be happy to help you with your TPMS sensor needs and would love to earn your business. 1.888.459.4080

Thanks for getting back to me. I contacted the Toyota dealership and they indicated due to the rim size (clearing the brake calipers) the 17 inch would not work.

I see in your post that a 17 inch rim would work if I purchase additional TMPS sensors.

Can I call you to discuss?

Tx

Trento

Sure feel free to give us a call, anyone here would be happy to assist you.

Here's what I would do because you are getting mixed messages. Pull one of the stock wheels off your 08 and test fit one of your 17" winter wheel and tire assemblies. This would be the best way to check to see if the spokes of the wheel will clear the brakes. There are some 17" wheel and tire options for the new 08's so the dealer may just be concerned with the curve of the spokes.

Once you have done this, if the wheel clears, you can then consider adding or swapping TPMS sensors in the wheels. TPMS sensors don't have an effect on the wheels fitment. TPMS sensors are just a safety system that is built into your vehicle that works with your wheels and tires. Here is a little more into on the subject. TPMS info- What is it?
