Going on a 2009 Highlander AWD Sport

Going on a 17x6.5 inch rim, either width is within spec to be safe to mount. These would be winter tires.

Either:
225/70/17=.7% too slow, i.e. 60.4mph when speedo reads 60mph
or
245/65/17=.2% too slow, i.e. 60.1mph when speedo reads 60mph

Tire price is very close (not consideration) but am leaning towards the narrower set for winter time. Any benefit to going wider?

Most likely going with Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S

Out of these two I would probably go with the 225's for winter use. You may also want to look into the 235/70R17's. This would be a great size for your highlander.

Please let us know if we can help you with your tires.
