You shouldn't need to cut any of the wiring. I think it should be all plug and play.

I'd say 2.5 or 3.

IMO the hardest part is trying to take the trim around the stereo off without scratching the surrounding plastic. The stereo in your Camry is very easy to take out. You will need a 8 or 10 mm nut driver. The most tedious part is matching up all the wires for the wiring harness.

Hint: You don't have to wire up the harness and stereo wires in the car. You can do that outside the car on a workbench or table. Less insulation to clean out and it doesn't get as hot. You can start working in your car once you have this done.

^And it's even easier than that because he is replacing an OEM unit with another OEM unit

Just disconnect the plugs from the back of the old radio, and reinsert the plugs into the new one. At least I'm pretty sure the 96/97 headunits should be plug and play.

Oops
I was speed reading and misread that and thought he was putting the Sony deck in.

Yea, forget the wiring harness part I mentioned.

I think Toyota has used the same plug for stereos since the late 1980s, so there shouldn't be a problem there unless there's external amps involvted.

The Scion Pioneer double-din ones are going for no more than $100 on eBay...those are a direct plug-n-play.
