Originally i was leaning towards a 12" IDQ, but i just dont think it will have the hit i want. my music taste varies from week to week, so one week i want something that i can feel in my chest and will rattle my teeth, and the next i want it to be straight up sq with light weight bass.
Now im thinkin about a 12" old school round solo-baric. I remember some dudes with these back in highschool, everyone says they sound really great...question is, will they hit hard enough?
Any other sub $150 SQLish (i guess) woofers out there?
Also, the solo's recommend either something like 450watt with a .88ft^2 box or up to 650watt with a .66ft^2, what out come would either configuration produce?

What do you have to potentially power your sub(s)?? Specs? What ohm configurations?? We need to know all of this before we can recommend something...
95% sure i just want 1 12" woofer...trying to conserve space.
I dont have an amp for it yet either, so none of that other stuff really matters. Ill find an amp based on the requirements of the sub. Although i am kinda looking to simplify this system down to just one amp.

Yea, the old school Solo's were actually considered SQ subs. one of the best small enclosure subwoofers around. Kinda crazy how they went from good to LOUD in just a few years.

Soundstream EXACT. I run a pair of 10"s myself -- they get plenty loud in a sealed box and are VERY accurate -- far more than the older Solo-Barics. Throw it in a ported box tuned to the right specs (1 ft^3 tuned to 28 hz I believe..) and you will be very satisfied.
$20 says Robert recommends the Peerless XXLS. I would too 'cept it's an SVC 8 ohm driver and getting the "right" amp may ultimately mean getting another one to wire down to 4 ohm, waiting for the SVC 4 ohm versions to be released, or getting the HT version with the passive radiator...
A round 12" Sub will not have as loud of an output as a Square 12" Sub. mainly because the Sqaure woofer has more surface area and thus can move more air. However Square subs can never have the SQ of a round one.
But if you are looking for a good subwoofer that has good SQ but can still have the kick that yo can feel Id go with MTX.
I mean everyone gots thier opinions but Ive had MTX's for 2 years now and the last pair i had was 2 12" Thunder 5500 subs and they rattled my windows, Warped my roof, and you could feel it through your back. And still could hit the low low frequencies in a properly sealed box.

thats interesting..but id rather not run ported. I havent got the time or the skill to make a ported box, nor the money to have someone else do it for me. I can make myself a sealed box in about an hour though. and yes i know how to do it, just never tried or understood ported.

Not quite...
Output has very little to do with surface area of the cone or shape for that matter. People just seemed to assume this since the only oddly shaped subwoofers on the market are made by Kicker (L5, L7, SoloX) and Xtant (hexagonal subs) and coincidentally, the Kickers have a decent amount of output and both aren't great SQ subs.
From what I understand, motor structure and materials are the 2 biggest factors in making a subwoofer "loud".

I just threw a ported box out there as a possible option since judging from your diction, it seemed like you were leaning more towards output than detail...
With that said, I still feel that you'll be very happy with the output from the EXACT in a sealed enclosure (1.25 cu ft) fed about 500 watts continuously.
Don't led the Soundstream name frighten you as the EXACTs were engineered prior to the company filing for Chapter 9 and the buildhouses relocated overseas. They were handbuilt in the USA.

No, the name doesnt frighten me, and actually i would rather have accuracy over output, but i dont want to sacrafice too much to get it, as i dont have audiophile ears, im like half tone death.

No, the number of amps isnt a deciding factor, i was just throwing that in there because it would be nice, but definatly not necessary.

Then tell us how much power and what ohm load you're working with.
But I think you'l enjoy the Diamond D6, Soundsplinter Rl-p, Arc Audio Arc Series, Oz Audio matrix Elite, Peerless XXLS, do some searching on ECA and see what's out there, but you'll be pretty happy with any of those(I would anyways)
I have 4 of the old solo 8's, 2 of the 10's and one of the 12's I must say my pair of 2 ohm 10's hit like a truck in a kicker speck box with about 800w! They actually hit harder than the pair fo Fosgate he 12's that I am running right now. Go for the single sub in a kicker spec box with the rated power... you will love it!

im really planning on getting the sub first, then im gonna buy an amp. Already looked at a few old school PPI's, Phoenix Gold's, Sound splinters, and Memphis. If i can find one and the cash, id like a 5 or 6 channel that i can run everything off of, like a Sony XM-7557 mobile ES amp... that thing or something like it would be perfect.

well im running 2 solobaric 12inch l7's in a ported box and they pound really hard and get really loud. they dont got the best sq for there price but they do sound good. id go with 1 in a sealed box with plenty of power.
