Will new speakers help my "Premium" stereo

Hi all!

I have a 2002 Highlander Limited and supposedly it has a nice stereo.

Its weak at best.

Before I spend a boatload on a new stereo, I thought I would change out the 4 speakers with better ones.

1) Anyone know the wattage output of my stereo?
2) What brand of speakers do you reccomend? These will replace the existing 5" or 6" round speakers, and at this time I dont really want them cutting door panels.

Any help is appreciated!

Premium???

Highlander Limited or Highlander?

JBL 3-in-1, JBL 6-disc 3-in-1, or Toyota 3-in-1?

I'll find out if you get me these answers. =)

Hey thanks for responding!

I have a limited, and the best stereo option they have which is 6-disc 3-in-1

Any thoughts are appreciated

Which means your speakers probably work off a Toyota specific JBL amplifier. You'll basically have to bypass the JBL amp, and even then, i don't think the factory headunit will work without the JBL amp.

You'll be surprised to find that the premium systems in the Toyotas use speakers that are rated about 3-ohms, catered to the amp, whether it's Toyota or JBL. If you get aftermarket speakers, get ones with higher senstivity ratings (in dB). You will be able to use the OEM amp to run the speakers. The OEM amp is probably something like 15-20 watts of continuous power.

That is what I was afraid of. If its not as easy as simply replacing the speakers, then I will likely replace the whole thing.

Thanks guys.

Finally, I tracked it down.

After looking through my 2001, 2002, and 2003 source books, the owners manual, and four different 1-800 Toyota numbers, I've finally found out the wattage for the JBL systems in the Highlander.

Survey says: 200 Watts.

Enjoy!

200 watts of maximum power with 10% distortion isn't real power at all, it's a selling point.

Yes I agree. There is no way these speakers have a prayer of handling that much power.
