OEM Amp, Which Harness Is Which?

Putting in a new stereo on a 97 Avalon with the (Nakamichi?) amp behind the glove box.

No bypass near the HU so I've got the glove box out. The amp seems to have two harness' on it, one longer than the other, one on top of the other. My question is which goes where? (Which one goes to the HU, which one to power & the speakers?).

The wiring for the HU goes into a box behind some plenum so there's no getting at that bad boy.

So far it looks like one harness has all the speakers plus two grounds and two 12 volt constant/memory. I didn't meter out the other harness entirely but it has 12 volt accessory (OY!). I don't imagine plugging one back into the amp will do me any favors as far as getting wiring/etc closer to the stereo or even 12 volt accessory onto the harness that doesn't have it?

I believe the '97 is different to the '98, in which the latter I had worked on. On the '98, I had cut all the speaker wires on the harness to the OEM amp, and connected them with the speaker wires from the aftermarket harness. Of course, the wires had to be extended from the radio cavity to behind the glovebox. It turned out pretty decent, minus the factory sub. This was on a XL model too. You'll have to tap the rest: 12V constant, 12V switched, ground, illumination, and power antenna (if available).

Hi Bob,

I just got a 97 avalon xls, and tried to get my stereo replaced. The guys at the shop were kinda puzzled (couldn't find the amp) so didn't end up doing anything. What did you end up doing to hook up your stereo?
