My capacitor seems to have stopped working. It's a digital one with the display on top. The display doesn't light up anymore and just now when I was out returning a movie I noticed my lights dimming when I played some rap music.
It's an Impluse 2.0 Farad Digital cap, if that helps. What should I do to see if it still works? Or is it a for sure thing that it's screwed?

well its possible id did stop the dimming. I mean when i got rid of my cap my lights started dimming again. But after the big 3 it doesnt dim anymore.
And yes it is possibble to blow a cap....at least in general electronics. If you over-charge them or short them they can leak. On the top of the cap near the terminals look for a overflow hole. if it has a liquid coming from it then the cap is done. Most big capacitors have these overflow holes. and they look like a pinhole covered by white paper.
haha try reversing the polarity on a cap... tell me what it does...
i've seen it many electronics newbies blow up caps haha... it ges messy...especially the electrolyte type.

acctually thats what i meant to say earlier. (not shorting but reversing).
I love charging elyectrolytic caps and throwing them at people and see them catch them with shocking results
But no not all capacitors are plorized...at least in electroncs. Mylar and smaller capps inthe Nano and Pico Farads are not polorized. Som Micro's are not too.
But as for Audio Caps for cars...they are all polorized and whill burst or burn if the polarity is reversed.
You mean to tell me your cap actually helped stopped the lights from dimming?
If a cap doesn't help, what should I add/buy so my electrical system doesn't die?
No, my cap never got unhooked from the last time it worked. It did get a motor swap done to the car it's in with no special care of charging/discharging it.

A good battery, a stronger alternator(best thing), and do the Big 3 upgrade.

Hrm...we have some RADARs here and the guys that work on it say they have caps larger than car batteries. I'd like to get my hand on one or more cough cough rail gun cough cough

Dude that is the sick shit right there.
For my Capstone project in electronics Me and my freind tried to build a rail gun. But we needed 2K to do it. So instead we built 5 Coil Guns.
The first coilgun used 400 330uF/220v Capacitors from disposible cameras. and we had a coil with 200 Turns and 10 layers. That thing shot a slug the size of a 9mm bullet about 100ft and could cut through a plaster/drywall
The second coil gun was a small pistol we made that used about 15 caps and smaller coils that thing was super cool.
Then the others were multi-stage coil guns we never got working.
bah i cant find my damn picture CD so i can show pics. But i will when i find it.
hmm most caps are polarized. all the VHFs, COMM systems, NAV systems.. blah blah blah i've worked with 99% of them are polarized. They often use micro- and nano- farads caps, which are polarized for the use for blocking and filtering signals. Unless you are working with radars and high power transmission equipment, you won't see capacitors into the milli- and higher.
