Look for one with dead reckoning. Sometimes you will lose GPS signal and the unit cannot plot your location. Dead reckoning uses vehicle sensors, ie speed, odometer, and a built in gyroscope sensor to help determine your location. Not all units support this feature.
Look for something with updateable software because sometimes roads change and the company will put out new maps.
GPS signal requires a good clear view of the sky. Even tree leaves can block the signal and you need the signal from 4 different satellites to plot your location.
