If your using a electronic (active x-over) in a hu, amp, or standalone + a passive x-over, you'd have what you described above.

In robsatx's case, the only x-over used is the one built into the headunit.

excuse my lack of car audio knowledge. but doesn't component speakers already comes with midwoofers?
2 way = tweet and mid.

3 way = tweet, mid, and midbass.

with active, you are using your HU to adjust your xover-pass and frequencies
HU -> Amp -> component speakers
Well active can mean multiple things. Electronic x-over = active.

Wiring components active (electronic x-over and amping each driver (tweet, mid, midbass) seperately).

You can wire components active different ways.

HU with x-over enabled ---> amp(s) ---> components (tweets, mids, midbass)

HU ---> amp(s) with x-over enabled ---> components

HU ---> standalone electronic x-over ---> amp(s) ----> components

with passive xover, you are using the pre-made xover from the speaker manufacturer, going in this order:
HU -> Amp -> Xover -> component speakers

with active, you are using your HU to adjust your xover-pass and frequencies
HU -> Amp -> component speakers

do i have these concepts right?

now back to robsatx's original post.

assuming i have all the theories above correct. he is running active setup right now.
so therefore he is not using the speaker manufacturer's xover, but using the HU as the xover. In total he current have 6 speakers not including the sub. 2x tweeters, 2x woofers (from the componet set), and 2x midrange in the back.

my question is, if he is connecting all the speakers to his 4 channel amp. there are 6 speakers therefore requires 6 channels. how does that work with his 4 channel amp?

somehow i think i'm missing a concept or misunderstanding it.

please enlighten me!!

You've got it dead on, didn't miss a thing. He ditched the rear speakers, so he's only running his 2x tweeters and 2x woofers off the 4 channel amp.
