Alright, I know you guys get asked this like 20 times a day...

But I really want a better sound system in my car.

Right now, I have a JVC KD-G510 headunit, which goes to 2 4" front speakers (Soundstream SST4.0's) that are unamplified.

The HU also goes to a Soundstream Rubicon404 amp, which then powers 2 Pioneer 6x9's in the back, and 2 'Dual' 10" subwoofers in the trunk.

Now before you say, 'what the hell were you thinking buying subs from Best Buy??', I bought them a while ago because I just wanted something to mess around with. But now I want some actual bass...

So I know I'm going to have to get rid of the rear speakers, which isn't a problem, because my Tercel doesn't really have enough space in the car for rear speakers. The headunit I think is fine for what I need, I'm not looking for like audiophile quality or anything, just something decent. I'm not sure how the Soundstream speakers compare to others, the same thing with the amp. (It's an old amp by the way, it looks like the Reference series).

I really only want to spend $300 upgrading my sound though...and that's not including a new sub box, if I'll need one, because I'll be making that myself.

Thanks for looking! Oh, and here's some pictures of my current setup...I honestly didn't really care what it looked like, so I just threw everything in the trunk Nothing broke yet.... here

Ditch the rears, make the fronts bigger and use components. Honestly 4's are a waste of money and r shit. Yeah this might be biased because i own em but w/e. Since u have limited space how bout buying audioque lw8's? They bump like crazy for 8's. Only 90 bucks a piece. 250- 350 watts is in its good range.

first off..he said he wanted some actual bass...you arnt gonna get that out of an 8
you might get plenty of midbass out of an 8...if you already have two 10's
go with a single 12 or two 12's...very rarely will you get more bass out of a smaller speaker unless of course you sell a kidney for it *sigh*...wish i hadnt sold my kidneys...hehe jk...

i agree with the ditch the rears
whats the output on that amp?

Here's the manual for my amp, this is the specs it has listed:
50w x4 (100w x2) @ 4ohm stereo
100w x4 (200w x2) @ 2ohm stereo
100w x4 (200w x2) @ 1ohm stereo

Thanks for the suggestions! Subwoofer size isn't really an issue, as I'll be custom-making the box, and don't really put that much stuff in my trunk. I'm basically looking for the best sounding stuff I can get for the money.

Heh...I'm surprised you even mentioned that, I figured someone would yell at me for just having the amp sitting there before they said anything about the bungee cords

I used to have it just sitting there, not even with the bugee cords. I didn't really care about it, it's just a quick box I threw together at work, and some crappy subs, so if they happened to break or something, I wouldn't really mind. Obviously, when I buy new stuff, it'll be properly secured and (maybe) look nice too.

lol I can't yell at you for the amp because their have been plenty of times when I just shoved it under the passengers seat and let it chill.

I thought I replied to this thread the other day...weird. Anyways. Can you fit a bigger speaker than a 4"? Do you have a pic of the factory mounting spot?

The Amp is a good amp, I'd look into a set of bigger components if you can fit them, then a small efficient sub. The IDQ10 or ID10V3 can be had for a little over a 100 bucks. If you can make a box yourself, figure at least 40 bucks. Then shoot for 150 bucks for a component set, but before buying, figure out the biggest speaker you can put in the factory speaker openings.

From what I've read about other Tercel's, 5.25's fit in the front fairly easily, and 6.5's can fit with extensive modding, but I don't think I'll be cutting the doors up, so I'll go with 5.25's. I can take a pic later today, the problem with bigger speakers seems to be more the mounting depth than the diameter. Thanks!

Oh, and I'm not figuring box price in at all, I get the materials for free from work, so don't worry about that.

OK cool, find out the max mounting depth, and also figure you will want to use an MDF mounting bracket. Figure the bracket will be 3/4" deep.

With the bracket, I'd say 3" is the max depth. The current 4" speakers have a mounting depth of 2", and there's a little more space than that. If there's something that needs a little more depth, I can make a bigger bracket, maybe use 1" MDF, or just put 2 pieces together. But if stuff is usually less than 3", that'd be cool. Thanks for the help!

Anyone have suggestions on a nice set of components? I really don't know which brands are worth it, which sound decent, and which are just overpriced...looking on ebay, there was a lot of different brands, but I don't know which ones are good or not.

Depends on what you'd like to spend.

Assuming you want to go passive, the JL Audio XR series of components are good.

PS, Cam I like your avi
