In simple terms.. active just means running you speakers with your headunits bult in cross over and sending your power from the amp directly to your speaker without a external crossover. Thats about it really..

^And each individual driver(raw speaker) getting it's own channel of amplification.

The crossover settings can also be made in the amplifiers crossover if it has bandpass, but usually amplifier crossovers aren't the best way to go.

You can use an external eletronic crossover to seperate the frequencies before they are amplified.

I prefer to have it done via the headunit or external processor.

But I don't suggest novices jump right into wiring active. Instead buy a decent component set that has passive crossovers, a headunit with 3 way crossovers and a 4 channel amp for them. For now bridge the amp and run it passive(opposite of active) and have the headunit in regular mode.

This way you will have all the needed equipment for when you are ready to try out wiring active.

x2.

It's mind-boggling hearing about aspirations by certain folks on this forum about wiring active when they themselves can't even set x-over settings properly.

With wiring active, comes certain complications and risks. Remember that.

In my opinion, getting a set of great speakers will make your setup sound, well, great! I'd like to think that for 95% of the car audio enthusiasts out there, a GOOD set of passives will satisfy your craving for sonic fidelity. It's that 5%, the audiophiles, that aspire to utilize their speakers to their full potential.

Is there an audible difference? Sure. But ask yourself before you consider wiring active: "Have I heard a GOOD set of components wired passively?? If so, is their a NOTICEABLE void in your listening experience?? What have you heard to reference and compare to??"

Finding a good set of passives [that suit your listening tastes] is hard enough as it is. If you don't need/want to, don't make it harder on yourself to try and fine-tune it to perfection. There are folks out there, who've spent the better part of a decade trying to get stuff perfect and even they admit, they're still trying.

Then, it's time to ask yourself the final question: "What do I perceive as perfect? What feelings do I associate with the notion of perfection?"

Sometimes, "good enough" will make you feel the most content with the music/sound reproduction from your speakers.

Bottom line: if you're just starting out -- get a set of passive components and enjoy!
