So, I got the ipod 2 car and that has inspired me to get new speakers, HU, and amp for the door speakers and maybe more :-)
So I have the head unit pretty much decided on the alpine 9853 but am open to other suggestions. I am also looking at an alpine 4 channel amp which is around 400 at best buy, and I know I can get it cheaper elsewhere, but it was what I wanted.
However, I am unsure what to do for door speakers. I know with the tacotunes mounts I can do 6 and halfs or 6x9s, but am unsure what size speakers I want to go with and what brand. I would like to keep the speakers around 200 for the set. If you get 6.5s do you get components and put the tweets somewhere else and disconnect the factory ones completely, or what?
I am a semi newb as far as car audio is concerned, so be gentle
Your headunit is acctually a nice one! I congradulate you on that one. Yea about that 4 channel amp.. 400 is way way too high!... i would look at elementaldesigns.com they have a really nice 4 channel amp for well under that and way better, plus free shipping. probably others i could reccommend but i have to get off pretty quick
As for speakers im not really sure what type of components you should get. But i do you you will most likely want to go with the same size as stock unless you wanna make some custom holes.. But when you buy components you get a tweeter and a midbass speaker. and a crossover. you will have to find somewhere to put the tweeter and you will have to remove the old stock speakers and just replace them. You cant leave the old speakers in unless you make more holes in the door and run more wires and oo what a mess..
Anyways that should be all you need to know for now. Im sure some more people will give you some hints and ideas sooner or later.

I'd rec. you look elsewhere for a headunit. If you're set on Alpine look for an '04 Model 9835. The '05's have problems and the glidetouch thing is a joke and very annoying.
I rec the Pioneer DEH-P860MP for a "budget" headunit.
For an amp, you need to decide where you want to mount it. Then see what's available in those dimensions.
Definitely rec. 6.5" Components. You seem to like Alpine Products. The Alpine SPX-177R (Type-X) components are about 200 shipped online and are very nice. You should be very happy with those.
What kind of Tacoma do you have? Are you looking for subs?
Well I am glad I asked about the head unit then :-) I don't really want to get a sub. The amp I would like to have mounted behind the seats in the dcab, and I am not set on alpine compnoents I just get them real cheap through work. It has also been recommended to me to get coaxials so I don't need to get an amp, but I am not sure of the difference between coaxials and components.
There's a big difference from components and coaxials. Coaxials are a great choice for rear fill if you like back speakers. But for the front, if you're going to be spending money, do it right and get components.
You should have plenty of room for the amp then if you have a doublecab.
So you get Alpine discounts? Nice. What other brands can you get discounts on? Alpine makes good amps, but find out exactly what you'repaying for the amps. Even though you get discounts there might be better stuff out. For example if your Alpine amp you were getting cost's you 400. With that 400 you can buy a Helix 5 channel amp that will kill the Alpine and you'll have an extra channel for a sub. (gotta get a sub )
How much does it usually run to get an amp and 4 door speakers installed would you say? Any recommendations on shops, since we are both in socal? (I can get all the wiring, harnesses from my work, so I am talking just labor)
I get a discount on all car audio at best buy cause I work there.

Depends on the quality of the install. You work at bestbuy and it sounds like you don't want to have them touching your brand new truck
I honestly don't know though. I know that if I was paying someone to do the install that I'm doing with the same quality work it would have been over 20 hours of labor. Main reason for that is the sound deadening done to all the doors. It takes time to do it right.

I've always done all my installs. So I haven't sourced out any shops. My services are for hire though
I've had the '05 Tacoma's interior stripped to nothing, and I've done two high end installs in an '05 Tacoma.

I see. Well see if you can get the Type-X Components for around 200 bux. I doubt you'll be able to get an '04 Model 9835 but if you can that'd be the way to go.
If you want something realy cool, you can get the DVA9860 from Best buy, then get the PXA-H701 Processor. That would be a killer setup, probably more than you want to spend though.
But if it came down to the Alpine 9853 and the DEH-P860MP, I'd still take the Pioneer even if it cost more.
The Eclipse you mentioned is a decent basic CD player. Not much in terms of crossover flexability like the 860MP or the 9853, but it's a nice cd player.
If you can get Alpine amps for really cheap that's not a bad route though. They're good amps. Just find out the pricing and do some comparison's to the stuff you can get online.

WELL, come to find out, my girlfriend has already bought me the Alpine HU :-) So, is it doable, or should I break her heart and tell her I need to exchange it?

It's not a horrible headunit. If you don't mind the glidetouch, and you have warranty, you should be fine.
well, I may have to do this in steps, cause I added up everything I want to do and , WOW! So, would I see any benefit from just installing a new HU? I was thinking about doing that first, and then going from there, if I do anything else at all. My big current complaint is that the ipod2car isn't very finctional, and by using the alpine HU and ipod adapter I remedy that problem. My bro put a new HU in his Tc and said it made a world of difference and he didn't even swap out the speakers or add an amp.
