1988 Camry, Audio Options?

Hi guys, I have a 1988 4DR Camry that I'd love to listen to music in, but the head unit has died since 2001. Do any of you guys know the speaker sizes for my camry are? I want to upgrade the speakers to aftermarket. My budget is around 100-150 dollars for all 4 speakers. It's very limited, but I'm sure it'll sound better than the 17 year old stock speakers. I also need a new head unit for around $150 so if any of you guys have recommendations, dont hesistate. Anyways, thank you for your time!

Your headunit died four years ago and you love listening to music, but haven't got a new one?

Is your budget for all 4 speakers AND the HU $150, or is it $300?

Oh no, I just recently acquired the Camry, it was my moms beater before that, so I didnt mind that the head unit died, but now that it's mine I'd like to hear some tunes. Sorry for the mix up.

My total budget is 300 dollars. For the head-unit I was thinking a Pioneer DEH-P3700MP since it's relatively cheap and can play MP3 CDs, would that be a wise choice, or are there better products out there for the price range.

Also for the speakers, i'd prefer them to be drop in (or one that requires little modicfication) to my stock 4 speakers, I don't know if thats feasible though since my car is so old.

go to cruchfield.com and put in your make and model and you can browse speakers for that price range and it will tell you if they fit your car and if it says it fits you can just drop them in, i might be wrong but looking on cruchfield for 4 speakers for 150 pretty much anything you find that fits for that price will be fine the quality wont change that much at a low price range like that, so whatever fits and you like should be good for you. For the HU the pioneer DEH-3700mp/4700mp are great entry level decks that will produce a good clean sound and last you a long time without putting too much burden on your wallet

if you need a cheap deck, look for an older eclipse. you will be able to find a used older deck that was amongst the best of its time for a very reasonable price. ill check ebay later for you.

as far as speakers go, spend all your money on the fronts and dont even power the rears. in a car as small as yours, there is really no reason to run them. if you like tunes, you wont be disappointed. it is very hard to reccomend speakers without knowing what kind of music you listen to. have you heard anything and liked it? as a general rule, stay away from anythign you can get at best buy or circuit city. is this all you are going to do, or will this be an ongoing project?

It's all i'm planning to do, buy a head-unit, and change out the stock speakers for drop in replacements, as i'm sure that'll do just fine. I'll be getting rid of this car in about 2 years so yeah... =D

Also the factory speakers located in the front of my car are in a peculiar position, they're mounted on the dash instead of the doors. Also they're not the same size, the left front is squarish, and smaller than the right front, which is rectangular and larger. The 2 rear speakers are mounted on the rear deck, and they're both the same size.

yaeh dont worry about the front speakers, the grills are square but the speakers are still round, you wont have any trouble finding speakers to fit them

What about the size? It says they're 3.5", but on Crutchfield it lists some 4" speakers as fitting too. This is for the front dash.

yeah that means its big enough for a 4" but it might not be deep enough for all models so you would need the 3.5" and it should come with a adaptor plate to allow you to screw into the factory holes

Look at Lightning Audio speakers at WalMart.

They are made by Rockford Fosgate and give the best bang for the buck.

As stated above, use www.crutchfield.com to determine sizing. Crutchfield is also a good place to compare head units. For about $150, you can get a Pioneer that also plays mp3s / WMAs.

Front speakers are 3.5".

You can fit 6.5" speakers in the rear.

^ Factory speaker needs to be cut out, theres no other way to remove them. And you'll need to drill new holes for the new speaker.
