Illumination lights for the instrument panel don't work after stereo installation
I have a 2000 4-Runner.
For some reason I decided to install an aftermarket stereo on my own. I bypassed (actually removed) the factory amplifier in the installation process. When it
was all said and done everything worked except the lighting on the
instrument panel. The warning lights on the panel work. The light
that indicates "D" or "R" when in drive or reverse also works. The
only problem is the overall illumination of the panel. I can't see
a thing at night.
I had the orange dimmer wires connected to the wiring harnessess on the initial installation and I disconnected them to see what would happen. Of course - Nothing. I have been trying other forums to no avail.
I have seen others have had this problem and the common answer seems to be make sure the dimmer switch has not been turned off or replace the fuse. I checked the fuse and it is fine. Plus the illumination light fuse is shared with the tail lights and license plate light and they both work fine.
Some kind soul gave me a detailed wiring diagram but its tough to follow as I am not electronically inclined. I don't know how to check voltage, relays etc...
So . . . Any ideas as to what I can do? Any opinions on whether this will be an expensive repair.
Any help or input would be appreciated.
