Changing speakers in an 05 Taco

I am looking to change out the speakers in my 05 Taco regular cab. Right now, it has a pathetic componate system. I am looking to switch out the speakers with some 6 1/2s.

I don't know where the stock crossover is? Should I locate it and change it with a crossover from a componate system, or should I just leave it alone and just replace the speakers on the wire ends? (downstream from the stock crossover)

The tweeters aren't so bad, but the mid/bass are terrible. What would happen if I just traded out the mid/bass with some polk 2 ways? What would be the effect of a 2 way, in place of a mid/bass? Would the tweeter on the 2 way just not get much of a workout since the high signal is being sent to the stock tweeter?

Right now I have a four channel Alpine amp that is putting 100watts per channel up there. what power rating should I be looking for on my new speakers?

Advice?

Also, the doors are very hollow and boxy sounding. what parts of the truck are most important to deaden with dynamat? Floor? Roof? Behind the seat (reg cab)? God forbid the firewall ;-0

Thanks in advance.....

PS: Budget is key ;-)

Hey Waterwookiee.

If you have a jigsaw or a router or a scrollsaw you can make some baffles very easily to mount new speakers. Just trace the outer edge of the stock speaker baffle. Then find the mounting diameter of the speaker or template and cut a hole for it. Then cut out the baffle.

This thread I've been working on in the 2005 Tacoma forum might answer some of your questions.

Installing a Complete Sound System in a '05+ Tacoma

Since you already have the Alpine 4 channel amp I would use the front channels for a set of component speakers(It's really easy to mount tweeters in our doors(see above posted thread) I'd rec staying away from coaxials. the tweeters would be pointing towards your shins, not that great.

And then bridge the rear channels to power a single 8"/10"sub.

Here's a pretty good deal if you don't mind buying used.

Thanks!

I read your post on a total install. Great info!

For now, I have sitting on a pair of Tacotunes 6 1/2" adapters so I am good there.

I basicly have the same setup, just with crappy speakers. I am using a stock headunit (soon to go), through the amp with the rear channels bridged to a 6" bazooka tube. It's really about the speakers at this point...

Should I just switch out the mid/bass and tweeter using the stock crossover (easy) or should I change that out with the crossover that comes with the new components and where should I mount the new crossover? Pros and Cons to each?

Is there any value to those cup shaped foam speaker baffles that you sandwich between the speaker flange and the mounting surface?

What power rating should I be looking for in a speaker system, given that my amp puts out 100w per channel. Should I go a little over or should I stay right on the max power of the amp? 100w amp + 100 max RMS Speaker?

I think it's an Alpine TR240?

I plan on deadening the doors, but what about the rest? I may be able to do the floor and rear wall (reg cab), but the firewall, roof, and floor in front of the seat will be a PAIN! Which parts are most important?

Is there an actual crossover on the stock system or are they just high/low pass filters on the front components?

I'm looking to run the factory head unit to a 4 channel amp - which speaker wires do I use for high level inputs? (front/rear)

THe stock speakers use a small inline capacitor mounted on the tweeter to seperate the frequencies.

Front left + is a pink wire
Front left - is a purple wire
Front right + is light green
front right - is blue

Rear left + is black
Rear left - is yellow
Right rear + is red
Right rear - is white

The turn on acc. lead that you can tap into for the amp is a very thin grey wire.
