im gettting a set of these components. they are 125RMS. i want to kno what would be the best amount of wattage from the amp? would 200Watts from the amp fry the speakers? what would happen if they are underpowered?
If your amp puts out 200W, you should either turn down the gains or risk damaging the speakers especially if the signal becomes clipped. With too little power, the output will be less volume or not as clear at higher volumes if you turn it up to where it clips. You can't really underpower them though, you probably could drive those speakers with a stock HU if you so desired.
technically, volume doesn't = power right? turning down the gain doesn't turn down the watts being sent to it.
please correct me if I am wrong .
If you send more power to it, you do have a much greater chance of blowing them.. I do not believe sending 200 to 125 watt speakers will hurt them.. but it might.. it is always better to get an amp that sends out the proper RMS for your speakers.
also, is it a 200 watt RMS amp? if its a wallmart 4 channel 800 watt amp.... then no, your not going to be sending any more than 60 RMS MAYBE..
what kind of amp should i use in powering my new components? would it be foolish of gettina cheap amp? should i go with certain brands? how much should an amp cost me. im thinking it should be 300RMS 2 channel amp? right? something around there
Search around on here. As far as brands go, Cam2Xrunner put together a pretty thurough list of what's what in the car audio realm. Cost depends on brand/quality really. Best way to do it is probably E-bay.

hey guys im looking at ebay for an amp to power my components. the components are rated at 125rms. i am thinking of buying the MTX 4202amp. it is 100 x 2 but the thing that worries me is that it says that its 100 x 2 into a 2Ohm load. what does that mean. whats the difference between 2 ohm and 4 ohm. and how are my components gonna be wired

If the amp says it does that power at 2 ohms then you will see half that power if you have 4 ohm speakers.
now all i have hookups for is polk audio. i use to have hook ups on infinity and im waititng for my connections for eclipse. can u recomend a nice amp that will power around 100 wats to each speaker rms wattage that is 4ohm.
If the amp puts out 100W x 2 @ 2 Ohms, it'll still work, but it only puts out half as much power @ 4 ohms, which the Polk speakers are.
If you plan on getting Polk Momo components, and you have hookups on Polk amps, get the 4 channel amp. Use two channels @ 150W for the components, and then bridge the two other channels for a sub.
