Switch 12V

Hey i got a 300W power inverter for my x-box in my car. i seen someone modify it so that he has a switch to turn the inverter on and off. The switch was placed near his cupholder. Does anyone know how to do this? Do i just get any switch cut the wire and place it into the switch?

Use a switch to trip a relay. Use the relay to cut power between the battery and the inverter.

I guess you can do it two ways.

1. Hook the converter directly to the 12 v cig lighter, place the plug on the wire of the 12 volt.

2. Do the above, only place the switch on the wire that runs to the converter. This allows you use of the cig lighter.

Either way, you can positiion the plug where ever you want as long ask you have a long enough extention...just pay attention to the gauge.

^ For 300W, it's probably best to connect it to the battery directly. Then use the cig positive to control the relay and put a switch inline between the cig lighter and the relay so that you can turn it on and off but only when the cig lighter has power. The cig lighter is fused at 10A IIRC... 12V x 10A = 120W

Don't forget to put a fuse on the wire from the battery to the inverter.

Do this:

The pic is a bit inaccurate because the cig lighter is only on when the key is in ACC or ON position.

Your inverter didn't come with an on/off switch?

my inverter is a 300W max. It does have a on/off switch. it's just very inconvenient to reach under the seat to turn it on and off all the time. I want to place it on a switch so it can look better.

im glad you suggested that, too many times people are not smart enough to see the danger in using straight switches in high current applications.

3rd Generation

make sure you use a lower gage wire (thicker) to power the inverter on the 30 pin and a the same gage from the 87 pin to the inverter. Also, have a good ground. Scrape away some paint till you see metal and then ground to that.

No need to do all that. You can utilize the relay that is already built into the inverter. Just pop out the On/Off switch on the inverter, extend the wires, and connect the extended wires to the switch. Mount the switch wherever you want. No need to mess with extra wiring and a relay. Plus you don't have to buy any switch or relay. All you need is some small gauge wire.

That's what I did. http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t87182.html
