Help with 06 rav4 please

Hi, I ended up with the jbl system. My goal is to post amp the head unit and run a 4 channel and a mono JL amp and run speakers to the stock locations. Going with a 8 inch mb quart sub and components in the doors.

My questions.

1) Does anyone know the brand or type of connector used to hook to the JBL stock amp...for example molex or such.

2) are the tweeters on a seperate channel all together or are they just crossovered from the same signal as the woofers.

3) what wattage is running from the stock pre amp/post amp? which would be a better location to steal the signal from.

4) I am new to JBL systems so any info you know of the system that could help would be much appreicated.

5) Do I need any type of speaker adapter?

6) If I use the mb quart....any chance the existing stock amp could be used and just not upgrade teh amps, or would it be just as crappy as it is now?

Usually I just buy and aftermarket HU and start all over, but this one has indash 6 disc, ipod hookup and steering wheel controls, not to mention I can find a dash kit. So just hoping for all the info I can get so I have a bit of background before I start ripping my doors off and say wow I didn't think about that.

thanks in advance.

Toby

Hey Toby, congrats on the new purchase.

I looked all over Tundrasolutions for wiring info and I couldn't find any of the PDF's yet.

I'd suggest getting a good line out convertor from www.davidnavone.com like the NE-774V and wiring it to the speaker wires after the amp. Then run RCA's to the amps and then run new speaker wire to your new speakers.

Then for the sub you can use the preouts on the 4 channel amp to send RCA's to the sub amp.

If you are using a JL 4 channel, they offer a RCA that takes the speaker input and turn's it into an RCA input for your amp, you can use that instead of the LOC from Navone.

thanks for the info. dug around and found the amp. collecting the speakers and amps off of ebay for now. Hopefully by then someone will have done a pin out of the harness. If not I will sit down and figure it out with my voltmeter.

another question.... Have you or anyone you know used a JL cleansweep? Is it worth the cash or should I just convert the line level speaker outputs into RCA's? Would the cleansweep work well with the jbl mess?

I think it is only worth it to use the Cleansweep if the sound system equipment is very high end and you are doing a full out 40+ hours install/sound deadening.

A good LOC will work fine if you are using semi-decent stuff. If you don't use the JL type cable, I rec. the adapters from www.davidnavone.com

Hmmm... Not sure, but I was planning on matting the doors.

Here is my setup so far that I will install.

JL E4300 4 channel
JL 250/1 mono

mb quart 6.5" components front 3/4" tweeter
mb quart 6.5" two ways rear
mb quart 8" dvc sub for the stock sub location

I want to do a HU but they don't make a kit for my dash yet, and I would have the steering wheel controls that wouldn't work anymore. so read up on the cleansweep and looks like it will clean up the stock signal to a good signal for my amps.

But if it really isn't worth it then I am happy to save money and just run the high levels in using those cables you showed me. Just researching as much as possible so I can have everything in my garage so I can get the install done over a weekend.

Thanks sooo much for the advice.

Yes, molex-type, not from Molex, probably from Tyco/AMP.

Typically, they've all been just high-passed with an inline capacitor.

Pre-amp unit does NOT send out wattage, only voltage. Most likely, the OEM amp probably sends something like 25-W per channel. Ideally, you should always tap the signal at the source. But since the closed system is of balanced-type, there isn't a clear and clean way to tap the source.

It has always been rather "bassy," almost droning the vocals out. All of Toyota's premium & JBL systems have the OEM amplifier powering the the headunit. So if you take the OEM amp out, the headunit will not power on.

Only way to find out (for now) is to find out yourself by taking the panels off.

Yes, the OEM amp can be used, and doesn't hurt to try them out first before gutting the rest out.
