Shallow mount sub

So, I think I am going to make a sub box that will fit under the bench seat of my truck. I have about 5 1/2 total inches of depth to work with. Thus I would like to find a nice 8" sub that will have as shallow as possible mounting depth. Any suggestions?

Is that the space you have under the seat or inside the box (MDF will take up 5/8 to 3/4 inches).

You could go with an Image Dynamics ID 8. They have mounting depth of 4.75".

I also found some 6.5" subs from a company called Mpyre. Their mounting depth is 3-5/8".

Elemental Designs 7" sub is 3.72" mounting depth.

That's the total space down there, so I need a pretty shallow sub. The good news is that being a single cab, it wont take much to fill it up with sound....

Any issues with having a sub pointing straight up into the seat, as far as sound quality?

you could go with jl audio 8'' i have 2 underneath the rear seats of my tundra and they face into the bottom of the seat... i always drive with the rear seats up mainly because when the seats are down i just can't hear it as much but then i again i can just turn it up more and hear it fine... so i'm not having any problems so far .... http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_s...p?series_id=22

The TC2 8" is probably the one I'd buy first out of these two, but I know the Arc 8 will sound great. You can use 5/8" Baltic Birch plywood as an alternative to 3/4" MDF to save yourself some mounting depth.

Also does your measurement include any space that would be needed for the cones excursion?

Is there any way you can do an enclosure behind the seat? How much space is there back there with your seat in your normal position?

(From the pioneer site)

TS-SW124D Design:Pioneer engineers were faced with the daunting task of designing a full-size, full-power 12" subwoofer that could fit into a small space – not the typical weakling 8" or 10" subwoofers the competition offers. Well, we did it and in the process five new patent-pending designs were introduced to the world. Pioneer engineers labored two years through various design concepts until just one achieved the unprecedented power, clarity and functionality in a speaker that’s only four inches deep. This revolutionary new subwoofer provides the body-rumbling bass of a fullsize 12-inch sub in a package that fits almost anywhere, especially behind a seat! The space between the cab and the seat was originally intended as a quick place to stash things like coats, spare tire jack and emergency equipment such as flares and flashlights. The UD-SW12 Subwoofer Enclosure is designed to easily fit in this small space. Despite the compact spacing, the TS-SW124D still performs like a full-size subwoofer delivering tight, clear bass you can feel.
