time alignment is good in surround sound systems and really high end setups. For basic listening you don't really need it, but if it's only a few bucks more, it's nice to have. most people can barley notice the difference. For those of you who don't know, time alignment is delaying the output on the speakers by just a little bit based on the distance from the listener. what it does is takes into account the travel time needed between the speaker and the listener and adjusts it so the sound gets to the listener at the proper exact moment instead of a few miliseconds off.

I wonder how it is "automatic" though. I would imagine time alignment to be user specific and therefore need to be calibrated by the user, instead of "automatically."

It uses a mic that you put where your head is, then plays a noise from each speaker. Then measures the time from when it sends the noise to when it picks up.
Someimes the auto works well, sometimes they don't do it so well. Do you know what stereo imaging sounds like? It's to help with that, so if you don't know what that is. Don't bother.

I know what imaging is, but I've never heard a "good install" so I couldn't tell you what it sounds like. Eh, ignorance is bliss, and it keeps me outta the poor house. I imagine if I knew what "good stuff" sounded like, that would probably be what I spent all of my money on (like some people around here).

Thanks for the replies , I think my tacoma's cab is too small for this feature . Might be worth it in a wagon or suv . I will just get a deck with a EQ .
I had a Pioneer HU with this feature. I used it a few times. You set the mic on the drivers head rest and then leave the car for a couple minutes and let it run some sound tests. When I gave it a listen it was better, but I still had to do a lot manual tweaking of the time alignment. It is probably not worth messing with. Just do it all manually.

Well you're gonna be mighty broke after you hear some of the systems at the BBQ this year!
Manual time alignment (actually I think it should be called "sound delay" ) can be made to work very well for imaging especially when speakers are not mounted in locations where the path length differences are too great (such as doors or a-pillars) or when the tweeter and mid are far apart from each other. IMO "auto" time alignment is not a feature I would consider necessary in headunit choice as I have never seen one work well.
^^My '02 Alpine CDA-7892 has "Time Correction" and "B-Focus", is that the same thing?...Haven't used either cause I don't know how to set them correctly.

I'll see how much of a difference we are talking about here in a while. I just bought the Pioneer DEH-P880PRS from 3.5 on elite. It has all those bells and whistles, so maybe when I show up to the BBQ, you guys can show me how to tweak it. Also, hopefully I'll re-sound deaden my doors and install those Next comps I have in my closet. Also, I plan on redoing my trunk setup this summer, so hopefully that'll be ready for the BBQ as well. It's gonna be a shame to have to "retire" that box (or should I say Tank) you built me Marv, but I'm gonna try my hand at building my own box and amp rack, as soon as I get the tools and space to do so. I'll probably be in touch for some pointers when I get around to it.
Any word on a date yet there Marv?

I'm not sure what B-Focus is but Time Correction is the same thing. If you have the owners manual it should tell you how to measure the distances for each speaker and set the delay accordingly. Some of the newer Alpine units (and others) actually let you plug in the distances online and it will calculate the delay for you (you just download it to a CD and insert it in your deck to apply the setting). Almost forgot, unless you are running an active system or the speakers are mounted coaxially time correction is not going to work well.

No date set in stone but it looks like possibly August 8th. Keep an eye out on Elite for updates. BTW, I'm going with the 880 myself .
