Question Cause of Death

i should of posted this a yay-while ago.
so i bought a audiobahn tube subwoofer. its an amp, an enclosure, and a speaker. i hooked it up once...hmm doesnt work. then we realized it was a bad ground...like zero ground. so then i hooked the ground up to the taillight screw(the screw and bolt behind the tail light)...so it worked. i drove home and it worked good. then all of the sudden, pretty close to my house, the sub shuts down.
when getting home i realize a blown fuse on the amp. i put another fuse in of the same amps and blown again. then my dad has the bright idea of sticking the fuse in...and then the power cable. thing starts smoking.
so...i checked the 12v and ground side of the amp and it shows a short inside. ok that explains why its not working but how would that happen? i sent it back and they gave me a new one and im about to put it together again...im gonna run the negative all the way to the battery this time..cuz i was told the power could of spiked and the ground wasnt good enough and caused it to blow.
what should i be aware of the second time i install this woofer.
thanks for any help

i didn't buy it from crutchfield but this is what i got.

Thats messed. A friend of mine has something very similar to yours and he has no trouble. I guess the bigger the ground, the better

Don't ground the amp to stuff like taillights or accessories. ONLY TO THE CHASSIS.
You can use existing bolts or...
Drill a hole if you have to. Scrape the area with a wire brush to ensure bare metal to metal
contact.
Secure the ground with bolt and nut, and protect the connection with rubber cement
or silicone.
