4 Guage Jumper Cable Instead Of Amp Kit.

Just was wondering...

Could I fuse up a 4 guage jumper cable to go from the battery to an amp?

The 4 guage amp kits available to me are fairly costly, (waaay... too expensive just for 'wire' and a 'fuse block').

I have a 1200 watt amp rated at 500 watts RMS. I already got a 4 AWG amp kit for that.

I recently came across another 1200 watt amp bringing the total to 1000 watts RMS.

I just ain't got the money right now for a second amp kit.
So I noticed a pair of jumper cables I had was 4 AWG and well... it was very tempting
but I didn't chance it.
I got fuse blocks and extra fuses...just not the wire.

Any thoughts or alternatives are appreciated.

Wire is wire is wire...
I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work electrically. However, I would be concerned a bit about the insulation a bit as far as being resistant to oil and temperature since they aren't generally use in a closed engine bay.

Have you checked out hte wire from http://www.knukonceptz.com ? Their wires are less than what you'd find in a store.

the cheapest way to go is by the wire by the foot, just buy exactly what you need, also im not sure about the insulation on jumper cables, it might not be able to with stand the heat of your engine might put off plus, the powerline may also heat up after prlong drives and stuff.

IMO if you have the money to buy amps, you should have money to buy the wire. wire isn't always "wire". good audio wires are oxygen free and sound a lot better. since you are running two amps, you might need to run a 0ga wire from the battery to the distribution box, then run 4ga to the amps. trust me, its well worth running better wires.

if you look you can get better wire for less, i like to use 4ga welding wire or entertainment wire , Go to a electrical supply store and ask for a 4ga wire with a high strand count (like an extension cord usually its about a quarter the price of the other stuff and the insulation is better!
