Gen5 Bass Amps, need suggestions

ok, i just installed my Alpine 9852 deck with the iPod connector. it works so well, its super bad. anyhoo, i'm lookin to improve bass. i'm currently running some old-school low-powered stuff. i have a 10" MTX sub (200W RMS) in a slot-ported box powered by an MTX Thunder 280 (160W x 1 RMS). i'm also running the bass signal thru a Clarion EQ, so its a much cleaner sounds than if i just ran it straight to the amp.

I want an amp that will give at least 300W x 1 RMS, maybe up to 400W. of course, i'll have to get a new sub to handle more power.

what brand amps should i look at and how much should I to expect to pay for them? so far i'm looking at Audiobahn and Alpine for amps. Alpine Type-R & JL Audio for subs. any suggestions? thnx!

Take Audiobahn off your list. Audiobahn is junk.

go for the fosgate t1 or t2 for subs, best bang for buck, then check out zapco for their amps, and if they are out of your price range go for fosgate amps too.

Gen5 found some stuff!

I went to the local shop n got a good deal. i was gonna get the Alpine V-Power MRP-M350 (300W X 1 @ 2-ohms) for $200. they didnt have anymore in stock, so they gave me the new MRP-M450 (400W X 1 @ 2-ohms) for the same price! it runs great. to match it, i got a 10" Alpine Type S sub (4-ohm dual voice coils) wired to 2-ohms. it handles 300W.

pics later...

That's a nice setup, that should be pretty reliable.

How does it sound?

yo Cam2X,

my new Alpine amp/sub setup sounds great. i dont wanna sound like an Alpine rep , but man, im more than happy with the performance. it also helps that i set all the gains, crossover freq and head unit settings correctly. the sub is in a slot-ported box and it pounds pretty hard. i'm thinkin of putting it in a sealed box to see how it sounds, to maybe get more accurate bass that can hit the lower notes better, too.

but the biggest thing that i'm trippin over is that the amp doesnt DIM the headlights even when a big bass note hits! if they dim (if at all), I dont notice the difference. the sales rep that sold it to me said that the new circuitry of the Alpine amp makes it so u dont need a capacitor, just good wiring.

my old setup had an MTX amp (160W x 1) with 10 guage wires. i had a LOT of dimming when that amp hit. the Alpine is putting out 400W x 1 with the 10 ga wire, and hardly any dimming?! plus, the amp runs so cool. in conclusion, its a damn good amp!

your gonna lose alot of the hard hit bass if you swittch to a sealed box. if you like the bass you got know leave it in the slotvented. also the only way to hit the real low notes correctley is have a sub that can handle them and then having an amp that can but them out

That is really dependant on the subs used. Normall a sealed enclosure will go lower than ported but the ported will have a higher output at the tuned frequency but generaly a sharper roll off below that freq. Sealed is about 75-90% more accurate than a ported enclosure but ported can get louder.

Gen5 switched 2 sealed

i switched my Alpine 10" to a sealed box. it was originally in a generic, slot-ported box. it sounded loud at certain frequencies, but poor and blurred bass at other times. i did some calculations and the reason for the inconsistent bass was that the ported box was smaller than the recommended volume. its at 0.90cuft when it needs 1.2cuft. plus, i couldnt change the length of the port to the real specs.

i now have the sub in a small sealed box, within the recommended volume range. right off the bat, i could hit the lower notes better and drums n bass guitar notes sound more clean. i havent tried to push the sub hard yet, i'll do that in the morning, its already night here, ha!
