My amp keeps going into protect

Today my amp keeps going into protect I guess from over heating.

My gains are set at the lowest level and the heatsink gets too hot to touch. The amp is behind the rear sears, probably 3 or 4 inches behind them on the back of the sub box.

My head unit is a Pioneer DEH-P860MP and my amp is a JBL GTO 755.6.

I am thinking of rigging up a relay to switch a fan on and off. How should the fan blow?

I have no rear speakers so should it blow air into the trunk through the speaker openings, out of the trunk to circulate air in the trunk. Or should I place the fan to blow directly on the amp somehow?

How do you have your subs wired to the amp? Is too low of ohm causing the amp to overheat?

My Kicker DX350 in my trunk rarely shut down in Phoenix, even during the summer.

I have 1 sub that is 4 ohms wired directly to the amp.

The thing is that is that it's only today is the first time that the amp went into protect since last September when I didn't know what I was doing and had the gains all wrong (maximum setting). I don't know if it's because it's starting to get hot out or what... it was 93 yesterday according to the thermometer in my car. I had my A/C on though.

I ghetto rigged a fan that blows air up one of the speaker openings to try to get more circulation into the trunk...hopefully that does something. It only turns on when the stereo is on and I put a resistor on it so it only gets about 9V so I can't hear it.

I just noticed something strange happening today. The volume of the sound fluctuates regardless of engine RPMs. Sometimes it'll get louder forcing me to turn the volume down, bu then it'll go back down forcing me to turn the volume up again.

At first I thought it was related to turning the AC up and down because that's when it first happened, but that's not it because it still causes the volume to fluctuate and it sometimes happens without changing the state of the AC.

Which VC and how do I tell?

It's a 6ch amp bridged to 3 channels. Two channels have passive components and one has my sub.

Usually it goes into protect after about an hour or so of playing and it only started recently as temperatures rose to over 100 degrees.

Unhook the sub, and run without it to see if the sub is the problem.

I use 4g power and ground wire
12g from the amp behind the back seat to the crossover in the doors and 16 awg from the crossovers to each component
10g from the amp to the sub, amp is on the sub enclosure
