Generally you wan to match the subs Watts RMS with the amos Watts RMS. For example, if your sub is rated at 1200W RMS, youll want to get an amp that put out 1200W RMS. You also have to match impedances. If you sub woofer is a dual 2 ohm woofer, you would want to get an amp that does 1200W RMS at either 1 ohm or 4 ohms. Also, you could get an amp that is slightly stronger than the subs RMS ratings, and if properly setup, you would have no ill effects. You could also go lower without a problem. I will be running in a couple days an Arc Audio Flatline Subwofer which is rated at 1000W RMS/ 2000W Peak and will be pairing it to an MB Quart RAA2400, which puts out 800W RMS.

A sub can never have too much power. You can theoretically run a 5000w rms am into a 1000w sub as long as the gains on the amps are set correctly. But saying that, I always go for an amp that has a little bit more than what the sub needs. So for a 800w rms sub, i'd put a 1000w rms amp there for the bit of head room.

But mind you, unless you are going to be playing tones, it will usually only need about 500w rms to go plenty loud in a daily driver.
