subwoofer woes

Hi all I need some help troubleshooting, whenever my head unit turns on or switches from tuner to cd, etc etc I get some sorta "surge" that makes a tap sound from the speakers and subwoofer. I finally took a look at what happens and when the "surge" goes the sub gets "pulled" into the box for a moment, which creates the sound. Oh and I notice this only started happening when I started running rca cables from the headunit preouts to the amp, rather than a line out converter off of the rear speakers. What the heck is going on? Now that I've seen it, I'm worried. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

*edit* found out it could be either from bad grounding or soft turn on/off or gains. Will check through and post results for anybody else that might have the problem.

Ok looks like the HU is the culprit, going to try and make an additional ground tomorrow to the chassis and see if that helps.
