Can I connect my mp3 player to speakers direct?

Hi, my old car stereo is knackered, I have been using a cd player with an adaptor that goes into the tape player to play cds through the stereo but is now broken. I was going to get a car stereo with an aux socket so I can plug my mp3 player into it but I was thinking there must be a way to connect the speakers to the mp3 player and hence no need for a new car stereo. Is there a lead that would do this or am I dreaming?

not really because the speakers need to be amplified. if you had an amp you could just go straight from the amps to a source, but no in your case your best option would be a new deck with an aux in plug.
