Sub/Amp question

OK so before you tell me how bad the brand of my amp sucks I will tell you that I already know. Ok, now that I got that out of the way I have a question about my setup. I just bought an Alpine Type R 12(freakin' sweet). My amp is a 1900 watt Kole(or at least thats what they say it is). My first question, I have a box for a 12 but it has inputs for just a single voicecoil sub. What would I need to do to still use this box? My second question would this amp be too much for my Sub? I have read that it is 800 watts RMS and 1500 watts peak. If the speaker is 4 ohm I should be fine but I don't have it yet so I am not sure. While I am at it would gauge speaker wire whould you suggest. Thanks in advance.

Get the diagraphs off google or w/e for dual voice coil wiring parallel or series depending on what ohm's u need(if your speaker has the dual input lugs) that way you only run 1 set of + and -'s out from the sub. Thats how i did it with my audiobahn.

Then with your amp just keep the level turned down on it.

Ok I found the diagram on www.jlaudio.com and that answered most of my questions. Someone needs to update the sticky they changed their site around a little bit. I was just wondering what i should do about my box since it only has one set of inputs. I might only need the one set that it has depending on which way i wire it, but I was just wondering what i could do. Just let me know.

assuming your amp puts out 800 watts rms, you should be fine. at what impedance does it put out that power? also, your type r is a dual voice coil sub. you need to know the impedance of each voice coil to wire everything properly. jl's website explains how to wire the voice coils in parallel or series very well. wire them appropriately and then wire one of the voice coils to the terminals on the box. you should not have any problems. as far as wire goes, standard speaker wire is fine for the sub; run 2-4 gauge wire to the amp.

Yeah so I finally got it, fedex didn't feel like going to my house. I got it all hooked up, someone needs to update the sticky though because JL Audio has changed their web site around. My amp puts out 800 watts rms at 2 ohm i have the 4 ohm version of the alpine type r wired independently. I have 4 gauge power and ground wires and I am using 12 guage speaker wire. well I think I just figured everything out maybe, just let me know if i am doing anything wrong or if you have the same type of sub and no some tricks to make them sound better.

Is that a "dual" 4 ohm sub? If so just by connecting both positives and both negatives together you will show a 2 ohm load to the amp (I'm not familiar with that amp so I'm not sure if it "really" puts out 800 watts but a quick way to get an idea is to look at the fuse sizes).

IMO the "tricks" to getting the most from any sub are strong midbass, well constructed enclosure of the proper size/type for the sound you are looking for, no rattles/resonances, a good lo-pass crossover and postition of the sub in your trunk/hatch (sub facing the rear typically produces the "best" in car response)
