Hey, just wondered, if Eclipse head units (cd players, etc) are made by Fujitsu Ten, who just happens to make/used to make the stereo components for Toyota, what's the chance that the oem toyota radio harness/plug would work with one, without the need for a adaptor?
I'm just curious. I couldn't find anything specific about it when I searched. I've got a '95 camry with the standard tape player, and thought that'd rock if I could just buy an eclipse cd player and do a plug 'n' play kinda thing with it.

Your chance is nil that you will find an Eclipse branded stereo to fit, unless it is manufactured by Eclipse for Toyota (OEM stereos).
All aftermarket stereos have a harness that end in bare leads. The easiest way is to get a Toyota wiring harness that will connect to the bare leads on the aftermarket harness. The Toyota wiring harness will mate right up to the harness in your vehicle.
Another option is to buy a newer used Toyota headunit. This will plug right up into your vehicle. Make sure they have internal amps though. The newer Scion headunits fit also and have MP3 CD capability, but lack tape players. Some of the really new stereos like Gen 5 Camry and prolly Gen 6 will not fit your Gen 3 because they are too wide.

Yeah, i was pretty sure it wouldn't work, but I was curious to see what the odds were that it was the case. I was looking at some cd players (eclipse and oem) on ebay, and got a chance to see what the plugs looked like for them both.

Several members of this forum have wired up eclipse units just by plugging in the FACTORY harnesses.
Fujitsu-Ten makes the HU's for most Toyota's. It's a win win if you are an eclipse fan.
hey mike, do what i did. i put a stock gen 4.5 stereo unit in my old camry. it was basically a double deck cd/cassette in one. the plugs matched right up and so did the brackets. no need for mods. trust me, it will sound way better than the stock cassette

That'll probably be the way I'll go, I just have to get the car up and running first
I see that the new Scion and FJ Cruiser head units have mp3 capability, and the FJ one has only the toyota logo on it...

the newer units will cost a lot. i was able to get my unit for sub100 so you gotta search for it. make sure its nice and clean and in good working condition. just don't get the unit from a celica because it will light up red, IIRC. stick with camry gen4.5 stereos and make sure they got a built in amp.
to check, it should have two outputs: a 6 pin and i think a 10 pin.
