Hey guys! this is my first post, ive been reading up on all your posts for a while now, and i just wanted to ask a quick question... oh! but first let me introduce myself (i know, not in the good section, but im at work and i gotta make it fairly quick... lol!) well im from NB Canada, and i recently got a '93 tercel sport 2dr automatic with 150 000 km (btw whats the real name for the 93 tercel sport? im the only person in my town that has a 93 tercel with a sunroof and a stock spoiler haha!) and i got a pretty good deal for it... free! well it needed a motor job, but what tercel doesnt at some point right? ok, to my question. I decided to install a sound system in my car, i already have 5 1/4 inch xplods in the front and a sony GT500 xplod deck and just bought a 12" sony xplod sub (i know, xplod throughout, but i have limited funds and seemed to be the best i could get around here for the price) now i just need to buy an amp to give some power to my sub... i was thinking about the XM1252GTR sony xplod amp... i know sony again, but its cheap! lol it has a max power of 800W and my sub has a max power of 1300W... would this be ok? if not could anyone give me suggestions of an amp that would be cheap and readily available in my small community? thx!
PS. i will do my best to post a pic of my car tonight when i get home from work
Not always true! I've heard some fairly decent stockers.
I'm not gonna lie though, Sony doesn't get a lot of love in most audio forums. They had some decent old stuff, from what I've read, but the new stuff, especially the Xplod line, is for all intents and purposes crap. Essentially, for the same coin you'd drop on that you could get some better gear (used, e-bay, even some nice deals on new equipment). Online shopping is where its at, especially if you're in an isolated-from-car-audio-area.
Ignore your "Max" ratings (peak) and pay attention to your RMS values. Match those up. What are those numbers?

I know, i know its just, the shipping online for cheap stuff is SO expensive!! my friend thought he had a good deal on a deck he bought off ebay, by the time he paid shipping, tax and COSTUMS (95 bucks for a deck he paid 100bucks off ebay for!!!) he barely broke even to having bought it in a local store... anywho, kinda too late now i have everything installed in my car... i dont want anything that'll make my car roll w/o the engin running, just want something that sounds better than my stock cassette player i had lol! yeah for the rms, the amp has 125W x 2 RMS into 4 ohms
340W x 1 RMS into 4 ohms
and the sub has
380W RMS
so if i understand correctly from what ive read up til now, i should be in the right range amp/sub and have no problems... whatadayall think? btw, just cuz i bought the sony doesnt mean i endorse it or enjoy the fact of having one of the lowest opinioned brands amongst car audio enthusiasts... but in my situation it was certainly the cheapest fix...
I don't feel like looking up your sub's specs, but I'll go ahead and assume that its a Dual 4-ohm voice coil sub. If thats the case, then 380 divided by 2 (for each voice coil) means that each coil needs about 190 watts, RMS. Your amp does 125 x 2 (all this is at 4 ohms) so its close, but a little under-powered.
Is the amp stable down to a two ohm load?
Check out JL Audio's site to find a wiring guide that will work for you. If it isn't a dual voice coil, back track a page, and select SVC. Find what watts your amp will produce at certain ohms, and find the closest match (RMS-wise) for your setup.

Ok, I just installed the setup... works great, pleasantly surprised with the bass... the car's so small it sounds great, exactly what i was aiming for now i must ask a question... put me down for the most hardcore noob question ever asked on this forum, but i just gotta ask... is their any chance of cracking a window in my car?... just have to ask cuz ive heard about ppl shattering their window because of a subwoofer... yes, its only a sony, but when i get the sound up to half, everything is ratteling in my car hahaha! well, thats it. Just had to get it off my chest... and remember, you can only learn by asking, or by making mistakes, being since i dont want to put any more money in my car for a little while i rather learn by asking
There are no stupid questions, just stupid...well you get the point...JK! LOL
I highly doubt you'll crack your windows with a subwoofer (unless you throw it through your window). There are guys that do SPL competitions, and I'm pretty sure that most (if not all) keep the stock windows. You're bound to get some rattles, but if you wanna fix those, put in some Raamat or eDead or SS Sludge or something of the sort. Its applied to your body panels to stop outside vibrations, but has been known to aid in internal vibrations as well. You could also get some RattlePad or other closed-cell foam type stuff.
