Im finally getting into some higher power setups/amps and i need to know if this is good or bad. I was checking the excursion on my 10 inch, with my new amp freshly installed. And i notice on hard hits it makes a 'drum' type noise. Like that youd hear hitting on a smaller tom tom drum of a drumset. Is this normal? Sub is only running a 2/3rds its rated power also. Also its in a sealed box.
Would've further tested it but my neighbor came out and was lookin at me with the phone in hand, damn B****
Check your enclosure first. Make sure there are no leaks, nothing rattling, nothing hitting the speaker cone from both inside and outside the box.
Then, since you said you got a more powerful amp, do you have a capacitor?
Amps with more than 200watts RMS should have a capacitor.
It's really hard to gauge how much power is running in a speaker in an instance. Your amp is rated say 300w and you have the gain at 2/3, it doesn't mean that the amp will not hit any higher than 2/3. It could still hit its full power in instances when a certain part of a song needs it.
Check the spider of your woofer, check for tears. If so, then your amp maybe too powerful for your speaker. If that's the case you have 2 options:
1. turn down the gain further or turn the bass down a bit.
2. add another woofer
The sub is only getting 2/3rds it power, cause the amp puts out 600w at 2 ohms and the sub is rated for 900rms. Its not like im running 1500w with the gain set halfway type deal. Ill check with the bass settings also, maybe it could be hitting too hard. IDK
What music do you hear it on. It sounds more like a crossover issue. If the sub gets a frequency that it can't handle, it will give a distorted sound. It tends to sound as though the woofer is bottoming out due to the long duration of the frequency versus the short excursion and reaction time of the woofer. Try adjusting your crossover point. If possible, go 10htz at a time. If the sound goes away then you know it is the frequency. The gain could still be a issue. If you force the amp into clipping it will leave a distoted sound. It is much harder to hear distortion and clipping on a sub, but still possible. How did you set up your gains. Gains are dictated by the voltage coming into the amp. Not by turning them to 1/2 or 1/3rd settings. My older eclipse amp required the gain to be turned just passed the lowest point to avoid clipping and input noise. If the amp has a bass boost, it will affect your gain as well. Try turning off the bass boost and keep your current crossover points. If it gets better, then the boost was forcing the amp into clipping. The eclosure could also be the problem. I doubt it is due to a leak. But to be sure press on the woofer. It should have a solid feel and bounce back immediately. If not, then look for a leak. The type of enclosure will change how the sub produces the bass. Bandpass boxes produce more bass than a sealed but sound horrendous on most music. A ported can give a very nice and solid beat, but can be difficult to build. The enclosure size will dictate how low and how high of a frequency the sub can reproduce as well. Did you simply purchase the box or did you go by the manufacturers specs? Try the crossover and bass boost first. Otherwise, I suggest looking into your enclosure.
Yea whilst i had the time, i checked the setups. I got the amp in like last week and just installed it to test it so i didnt really tune everything(just turned down gain and crossover,). I noticied the bass boost was like 90% turned, so i turned it down to like half. Also the LPF was turned up, so i turned that down. Cause with all the stuff normal before just tuning it just now i could turn my player up to 3 and itd be rattling the back panel already. Bass boost was turned up way too high. So that was probably my main deal causing the sound.
Sounds like the voice coil is hitting the back plate. When this happens your xmax is pretty much maxed out. Time to turn down the volume or buy subs with more excursion capability.
I may have found out what it really was, i was dicking around with my sub today, making sure i had it wired for 2 ohms(something just told me to check cause i had it at 8 before). And as im screwing in the last screw that holds the sub tightly..i notice its stripped out..wtf? saw dust all around it...Appear the sub was pounding so hard it pulled the screw out haha, so that may have been where that sound was..the sub would hit and the sound would escape thru that loose end
