Possible to create system for $400?

After reading a little bit, there's a LOT of work that goes into having a system (alt and stuff). I was going to have my friend find me a set (sub, amp, enclosure) but I don't know if it'll work well on my car ('88 Camry) but his price are cheap at around 180ish. so can you guys peice me together something for 400? I'm no audiophile nor need it for competition so a single 10 or 12 is good. I have aftermarket rears (infinitys?). Let me know what info you guys need. I can probably get a HU from my friend.

No idea on electrical demands of an 88, but with $400 restriction, that shouldn't be an issue.

The next question is, what do you want to get with that $400? Are you going to go with an aftermarket head unit? I'm assuming you'll need speakers, subs, amps and wiring for sure. So tell us what exactly you're looking for, as far as components of the system go. I could spend $400 just on sound deadening or wiring honestly, so it is certainly an issue of how far do you wanna stretch that money. Are you willing to sacrifice quality? Just want some bump in the trunk? Add-on other peices later? etc...

I already have an aftermarket HU but it's a pretty crappy brand so I'll probably get that from my friend. I'll just need sub, amp, wiring, and an enclosure. Forget about adding peices later, I just want some bump. I'll sacrifice quality if it doesnt sound too bad.

One Word: Ebay.

Sub amps are cheap on there, you can get a "decent" one for a little over $100. Subs, they are relatively cheap too. Wiring, well, you'll nee RCAs, speaker wire, power/ground wire, etc.... Box is really the only x-factor. If you wanna build your own, you can manage one for under $100. If you're buyin' prefabbed, well, thats another story. Be prepared to pay well over $100 for a prefabbed or to have someone build you one.

400$ is super do-able...since you already have a HU and speakers.. 12' sub + box ~ 200$ get a cheap mono channel amp or 2 channel amp and bridge it.. ~ 100$ amp install kit 20$. boxes aren't that expensive... you can even buy boxes+sub at best buy for like 200$

Why buy when you can make your own for like ~$50?

I meant making a box, but yeah, you can make subs and speakers too. Check out Parts Express. They sell all kinds of DIY kits and stuff.
