I have a 2001 XLS with the premium JLB Audio. I've had two subs in the rear deck crap out on me so I realize I'll finally have to get an external unit.
This will be used primarliy for Rap and some occasional Rock/Jazz so I would like the bass to be as clean as possible. As I understand it I should stay with a 10" or smaller woofer. I also don't need others to hear my music, but I do want to be able to crank it up and have it sound good while I'm in the car.
I plan on having this installed at CC but am open to other suggestions. Could I find a better deal on these parts or better parts elsewhere?
You're not gunna get the best sound from those Kickers. Kicker makes great subs, but those are there cheap models. I say spend a decent amount of money on a sub. I will go all out and recommend one 10" Alpine Type-R. It will give you very good bass that is nice and clean n crisp. Also, it will last quite a long time. Kenwood makes a perfect amp for it, which is a 9102D I believe. It's a 1700W max amp and 850W RMS and is on Ebay for $120-150. The 10" Type-R is 1500W max and 500W RMS. Ebay also has cheap boxes and wires. I'm recomending this to you because I have a 12" Type-R with the Kenwood amp I was talking about and got it all on Ebay including a nice 4 gauge Power Acoustik amp kit for $40 (wonderful deal), a box which was like $30 or so, and a Power Acoustik 1.2 farad capacitor for around $40. I got EVERYTHING for around $400 and for that price, NOTHING will beat that setup. It sounds very, very nice and will be the best sound for a relatively low price setup.
Just thought I'de make a recomendation (I work at Best Buy, I'm used to talking a lot about this stuff). But to be honest use Ebay man, screw any retail store. You'll spend half the price for the same new products.
I'll shutup now though...goodluck with your setup.
96coupe thanks for the suggestions. I think I am going to take your advice and buy everything online.
I have a question about the enclosure. Is there any specific type of enclosure I should look for. Will any 10" enclosure fit a 10" sub, and 12" w/ a 12" sub etc?
I am strongly considering some of the components you already listed i.e. the Alpine type-r. What reputable online stores do you recommend I purchase from?
And what reasonably priced enclosure will be a good match for a 12" Type-R?
Again I am still sticking within my budget but I realize I’ll get allot more equipment for the money if I buy online (which isn't a surprise as I buy nearly EVERYTHING else online). I just don't know much about car audio so was hesitant about purchasing the wrong things. Now that I have an idea of what I need I'm going to buy all the hardware online and have a local shop install it.
Different subs need different size enclosure. Be sure you get the right size. Either that or you can, or have someone, build you a custom one. If you are inclined and have the tools, an enclosure is easy to build.
You want the enclosure to be no less than 5/8", preferably 3/4" or thicker, MDF.
Sealed or ported is personal preference.
Well for that sub you'll need a specific cu ft of volume. Find that and get a box for that size(volume and Sub Size). bets idea is to go to a store and listen to some subs u are interested in and then buy online.
Hope you find what you like

Unfortunately most of the time the shops around here don't even have the equipment hooked up properly so you can demo it. And sometimes I feel guilty taking up a salesman's time if I have no intention of spending money at their place of business.
Anyway I couldn't take waiting any longer and I wanted to make sure what I got was compatible with each other so I pulled the trigger on this:
