Not bashing, just being honest. If that was your experience, it sounds like some store took you for a ride, and I'm sorry.
A single sub can pound. It all depends on the sub, the enclosure, and how much power you are giving it. I promise if you put a 12" (or 10" for that matter) Brahma from Adire Audio in a 1 cubic foot box with 1600 watts in your trunk with the seats UP, you probably wouldn't be able to sit in the front seat and turn the volume all the way up without hearing loss. Most seats do nothing to block low frequencies. The foam in a seat is great for blocking high frequencies, but the frequencies a subwoofer plays will go straight through no problem at all. If the seats are backed in metal or something (like some Lexus trunks), then yeah, you got a slight problem. I haven't seen a Toyota with that problem though.
