2nd Generation Tips and Advice for installing rear speakers on Gen 2 (1990) Toyota Camry

I've been doing a lot of research on the rear speaker install process for a 90 camry, but I can't seem to find any details on what I need (adapters, splicing wires, etc). The only thing I know is (1) to get access to the speaker, I have to pry off the speaker grills behind the seats and (2) they're 5.25"ers. Today I pryed off the grills and I expect to buy a pair of speakers over the weekend at a retail store. I know a lot of members on here recommend crutchfield.com since they bundle the additional installation tools with your speakers, but I'd rather listen to how the speakers sound in person before I make a purchase. Besides the speakers, do I need to buy anything else (like connector adapters, spacing adapters)?

Thanks,
driving90

na, if you're just dropping in stock size 5.25's you wont need anything else. Just cut the connector off of the stock wiring and hook up your speakers to the leads left over. Watch out for mounting depth though, not much of that back there.

alright, thanks.

I have another silly/supid first-timer question...if I use a pair of 3-way speakers that are rated at 100 Watts, would the stock tape player in the camry be able to handle it or do I need to get an amp?

Thanks for that.

Another question: While it can be powered off a head unit, I sometimes like to turn up the volume on songs I like...I usually stop at about 2/3rds full on the volume knob. Is it likely to blow the 100W speakers if I turned the volume onto that level without a high-powered amp (since the head unit basically a low-powered amp)?

Exclamation speaker bracket help

alright, after trying to install, it looks like I'll need a speaker bracket to fit the 5.25" in...due to the camry's stock speark having that weird metal frame.

i dont have the tools (jigsaw) or materials (mdf) to make a bracket myself but crutchfield sells a speaker bracket designed for a gen2 camry for $20, but it comes to $27 after S&H...abeit expensive...

http://www.autotoys.com/x/cust/produ...cat=272&page=1

would that look like it'll fit in the stock's speaker frame or am I better off coughing up the $ for the crutchfield one?

p.s. when I was hunting around town for speaker brackets, one of the installers at a local shop said something about using spacers instead of brackets to install an unfitting speaker....anyone know what he's talking about?

these will be be the dumbest car audio questions you will ever hear:
what is a spacer, what does it do, and how do I use it?

it puts your speaker higher.. you screw the spacer to your deck then the speakers go on top of that.. so as long as the magnet isn't bigger than the stock hole it'll fit in there....

update:
alright, I got a pair of 6.5" sony xplods and I installed them into the rear. after installation however, only the rear left one worked, so I did the AA battery test on the right speaker (wire it up to a AA and see if the speaker makes any noise) and the speaker was working. I guess this means somethings wrong with the wiring to the rear right speaker. Any ideas on what I should check?

^ You kinda answered your own question. Check the wiring.

If that fails, you can run a new wire directly from the deck to the speaker.

sweet. I know some american cars have fuses for the speaker wires. I guess toyota doesn't have them?
