Best way to see if my New Stereo is working???

Hi,

I am helping one of my buddy to fix a new MP3 CD Stereo on his car. He had a different player earlier but it got stolen. The theif's pretty much jacked off the whole harness leaving behind on a bunch of wires.. I have figured out all the color codes but I am not getting power to the stereo??

I checked with a multimeter and my ignition wires produces 12V...

Pls correct me if I am wrong.. To verify if the player itself is working I connected ONLY the ignition and the ground wire from the Car to the stereo harness and cranked my engine.. by right at least I should see the stereo power up right??

Local shop here is charging me $30 just to bench test the player.. darn.. I think it is DOA item ... pls advice..

best way to do it and problly the way the shop would test it is to connted it directly to the battery of the car. hook up the red wire (12v on) and yellow wire (constant power or memory) to the positve to the battery then the black wire (ground) to the neg side of the battery and see if the radio turns on
