Alpine HU Radio

Hi. I'm new to this forum and looking for some advice and thoughts. I'm planning on putting a new audio system into my 2002 4runner. The CD is jammed in the factory HU so it's a good excuse to upgrade. I'm leaning toward the Alpine 9857 for a HU but have a couple of concerns and would like some advice and thoughts.

First concern is radio reception. I've read that the Alpines have poor reception. My wife listens to alot of FM radio. I usually listen to CDs or AM sports radio. I'm in Orange County california and the factory head unit can pick up both FM and AM from LA and San Diego. It's pretty impressive. Much better reception than my BMW. Will the Alpine (or any aftermarket) perform as well? or will I lose the reception?

Second concern is that I hear replacing the factory could mess up the factory alarm. Is this true?

Thanks, in advance!

I have the Alpine 9852. i bought it just for the iPod capability. as far as radio reception, it works great. as good, if not better, than my OEM HU. in fact, my Alpine even made my OEM speakers sound better, b4 I upgraded all of them.

you shuld have no problem with radio reception from alpine.

Thanks for the replies!

Fred, how do you like the ipod controls? It's one of the main reasons I'm going to get the 9857. Also, any experience with HD radio?

Thanks again!

the iPod controls on the faceplate takes some getting used to. i find it best to make playlists on the iPod and select from those on the faceplate.

unless someone comes up with a HU that simulates the iPod "wheel" and screen, then anything will take some gettin use to.

sorry, i have no experience with HD radio. i mainly listen to my iPod. and if i DO listen tot he radio, its for AM sports talk.
