96 Corolla Rear Speakers

i have a 96 corolla dx, i tried several attempts to install the rear speakers but to no avail, the furthest i got to was taken pin out and pop off cover of center brake light, popped 3 white plastic pins from under the rear carpet deck in truck, those 3 pins hold the front part of the deck cardboard... the rear part is where i stuck... it seems they are covered by the plastic panel on sides of the car interior where seatbelts go into... i tried to play around with seats.. but no luck.

i searched online, and some information suggest to remove the rear seats, by entire rear seats, does it mean to include the rear deck with brake lights? and with side plastic panel that seatbelts go into? i'd really love to know more about how exactly to remove the seats...

fyi, my specific application is a 96 corolla dx (canadian), there are no STOCK rear speakers, however i can see there's is wiring under the carpet of the rear deck.. and the backseats is a 60/40 split, can be folded down..

thanks a lot in advance!

I don't know anything about the Corollas but I can tell you that to access the rear speakers in my '95 Camry you have to take out the bottom half of the seat, folt down the top, remove the two "cushions" to each side, then pull off a panel on each side, remove the brake light cover (and brake light?) and then remove the entire rear deck. It's quite enjoyable.

The process is similar in the Corolla. Take off the bottom seat cushion, remove the pads on the side of the back seat, make sure the seats are folded down, disconnect and remove the center brake light, and then pull up on the front of the rear deck. Once the front is lifted up, you can pull it straight out (with a little beding at the edges). Ive had the rear deck off my car probably a dozen times and the bending doesnt harm anything.

I just had to replace the rear speakers in my Mom's '95, and having this process helped a bunch!

Here are some clarifications to the above process that might help others:

* The rear seat bottom cushion has 2 clips anchoring it down underneath the front edge of the cushion. Just pull up on the cushion to release these clips, then the whole seat bottom slides forward and out easily.

* Removing the rear seat side bolsters is easy. They're held in by a single bolt at the bottom (11mm, IIRC). After removing the bolt, lift UP and out on the bolster; don't pull it straight out.

* Removal of the 3rd tail light is required, unfortunately. There are two plastic lock pins on the light housing. You can probably work them out with a flathead screwdriver, or an upholstery tool. Once the pins are out, the cover comes right off. Then there are two bolts holding the light in place; remove those, and disconnect the electrical plug, and you're done.

* The rear deck cover has 3 clips along the front edge. The clips can be released by hand, but a panel tool might help. After releasing these, you can pull the cover out with a little effort and bending the edges slightly, as the OP mentioned.

* What's tricky about the deck cover are the factory speaker covers, which you do NOT want to remove. Note they are held on by pressure clips and you will likely knock one or two of these off and/or break the clip off while removing the deck cover, so be as careful as you can. Secondly, there is a foam ring around the factory speakers that fits into the covers. You don't need it, but in case you want it, be careful not to tear it when removing the deck cover; in my case, the car's age meant the foam was pretty well deteriorated and falls apart easily.

* One other note about the deck cover. There are 6 metal clips along the back edge that hold the cover in place beneath the rear window. Make sure you seat these clips when replacing the cover. In the picture below, you can see the deck cover's front and rear clips:

* The speakers themselves are standard 6.5" speakers. I bought some Kenwoods for my Mom's car, which were a drop-in replacement, including the wiring.
* If you want to keep the foam rings, a hot glue gun is perfect for gluing them to the new speakers.
* Reverse your steps to re-assemble everything. Here is a new speaker, with the foam ring on (notice the smooshed/torn foam):

This write-up, which I think is for a Camry, also helped me:

Good luck

Thumbs up Amazing

Thanks for adding your post on this thread. That is the best explanation on this process i have ever seen, the pictures are perfect and very detailed. Unfortunately I have already found my way into the car I was working on . Again thanks for your support and I'm sure this will help someone out a lot somewhere down the road.

Thanks, hopefully it will help the next person to take on this job.

As a side note, I think I remember the bolt sizes now. I think the rear seat side bolsters actually use 12mm bolts, while the third tail light uses 11mm bolts. Please correct me if I'm wrong...

This is a really helpful thread, I have to point out your not removing the brakelight cover properly, those buttons have a center pin, you simply push the pin in and the button pops right out. you don't have to pry on them at all. excellent photo's btw.

Thanks for this write up. I just bought a 96 DX as a commuter and the speakers were shot. This helped out greatly. Thank you.
