I have a 99 camry with the double din head unit. I plan on repacing it with an after market single din. Does any one know where to get a "pocket" to put in the newly created opening? I would try a junk yard, but more than likely they have already been used to replace borken/stolen ones. I also plan on bypassing the factory amp, do i need a special wire harness or will the Wal-Mart harness work? This is also my fist intsall on a toyota, do I need to buy an antenna adapter like for a nissan? Sorry if these topics were previously discussed but my search results return nothing. Does anyone else have problems with this sites search not responding? Thanks
I installed a single din aftermarket on my double din 98 camry's. I believe I ordered the pocket either over crutchfield or ebay. The wiring harness I bought off ebay and just used that to bypass the factory amp. I didn't use any antenna adapter, I believe our's has 2 plugs for antenna and I only use one without any problems
Thanks for the quick responce. This instalantion sounds easy. I plan on using a MB Quart component system to replave the factory speakers. Is 20 dollars too muck for a "pocket"?
ok just installed a new HD radio and I thought that I was supposed to bypass the factory amp. insted, crutchfeild sent me a wire harness that plugs into the ones the stock radio were plugged in to. Is there a differnt set of harnesses that I should be using? Because my rear speakers still are not getting any signal. Do factory amps go bad like that, just the rear speakers stop working?
Ok there is a thread somewhere with pics but I dont have a chance to find it for ya, but basically when you took out the double din your old hu was connected to a wire harness. With you new one you want to attach the wiring harness you bought to the hu and instead of plugging it back into the same wiring harness your old hu was attached to, there should be another set of harnesses in the back right corner of the pocket. You take those and unplug the one that is coming from the wire that your old deck was connected to. now you put your new hu wiring harness into the spot where you took the other one out
pictures of this elusive amp bypass wireharness would be awesome. the ony other harness i see is black and it is cramed way up next to the clove box on the front right. I will try to get pictures up soon. but you can only see the harness with a mirror, does anybody have a picutre of the amp located behind the passenger side kick panel, maybe i was wrong about the factory amp, but the car is a 99 camry le with premeium soumd, tweeters and a double din cd/cassett player without the pocket below the radio? am i right to assume that there is an amp? there are plenty of wire harnesses behind the kick panel. you toyota enthusiest seem to know your stuff very well,
thanks, matthew
did you already order it? I have a pocket I can send out to you.
the one I have has a door that folds down covering it up and I dont' need access to it.
And how is the HD radio...I've been wanting to get HD reception... lots of stations to listen to?

thanks any way I have already installed the radio and pocket, but no sound from the rear speakers. tyring to figure out why. the HD is so cool. Ok you listen to your favorite station, but they are not always playing what you want to hear, just switch to their alternitive selections (2 or 3 depending on the station), awesome! way better than any satillite, because it is free! and fewer commercials.
first test the fad...put it to the rears only. if its not that check the wiring. might just be loose somewheres.
Do you have an amp hooked to them? check those connections.
Ya...I've been wanting the HD for a long time. A couple of months ago I was asking people where to get a HU that recievened HD. They all replied "huh? but that's what satellite radio is." They didnt' understand I wanted the free stuff. Right now Only a few companies have the option. I want a screen/dvd HU, but not sure if have ones with HD capablity yet. I will have to wait for a bit for that.

Ok Xet, thanks for the link. I do not have those extra connections . The radio that was in the car is a Toyota 16810(you can find pictures on google web search). I do not have a JBL radio I must not have an amp, wondering what is behind kick panel? Crutchfeild said that I had an amp there and i needed to buy a special harness to bypass it, but when it arrived it looked like a normal harness to me. in fact the exact same one pictured in the link. I guess I need to rewire the rear speakers because there is no signal(volts or amps) getting to the speakers with the new head unit or the old unit. Does anybody know where the factory wires for the rear speakers are routed? Also are the factory tweeters on crossovers? I will try to post some pictures it might help with my situation. Thanks to everyone for their patient help.
Matthew
I got the JVC KD-HDR1 form amazon(best price). Fad was the first thing i checked on both of the units. I do not have an amp unless i do not know about it(factory installed/stock), I am still unclear whether or not I have one. Have not had time to check the continuity between the head unit and the rear speaker terminals. Thanks for the advice.
