in dash dvd players only view movies in park??same for all brands???help!
hi recently i started to want to get some kind of dvd player w/ a screen for my car.preferably a double din w/ a 6.5 screen all in one.or a in dash flip out.either way i heard from someone that the dvd players can only be activated when the car is in park, which i know is safer but horrible.someone told me there is a bypass code for some.i know dual has one for there in-dash's .my question to you experts is: does every companys in dash players have these annoying features of only being able to watch/play movies when the car is in park??are the better brands like panasonic or clarion have these annoying things too?or is this a feature on all in dash players and they all need bypass codes??please help thanxx
They all have the safety feature of only operating while in park, but in many of them, grounding the wire that is supposed to be connected to the parking brake will solve that problem. A limited number of other models have gyroscopes within the system to detect motion, these are the ones where a bypass code can be used. If you do the install yourself, wiring it to play while in motion should be no problem. If you get it done, make sure to ask before hand whether or not they will ground the parking brake wire, as some installers will not.
Oh and being in NY state......NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law section 375 sub 24 says you can't have it it playing in view of the driver while driving.......
not that I ever do this with 5 screens in the car...
Well slick you cant just ground the wire. that just wont work. you have to ave a switch or mostly all dvd players have a code you can use. just what ever you get google in the model nuber and there is a trick you do. like ground park brake wire three times so blue screen goes away then hit stop twice then 1264 enter then you get a screen up that says park brake override and turn on then you hit sys set twice and it is done no need to ground wire all the time that wont work. that is on a jenson uv7i
the reason why just grounding wire doensent work is becasue you have to do the park brake dance wich mean you have to puss in brake brake 2 or three time and then the blue screen will go away.
the other option is to get a switch at is normaly closed(i think this means it lets electricity through) and it has to be momentary switch. you press three times and you are golden. and if you hide the switch then if youy ever get pulled over and you can show the cop you cant watch move wile moving becasue it has a blue screen when park brake is not on. that way it appears that it cant work when moving but you just do the switch dance and you are in buiseness.
hope this clears thing up

Um...the indash system I had in my last car, all you had to do to was ground the parking brake wire. I can think of at least 4 off the top of my head that will operate by simply grounding the parking brake wire.
i have an alpine in dash unit and they sell a bypass module which you attach to the wiring harness for the stereo and that will do the "dance" for you and its relatively cheap too

I like that a whole lot better memphis so chances are ill be wiring my unit in and if its something easy to do rather than screw with wires and whatnot.ill do that for sure can u link to me to anywhere i can get something like that thanxxx
only downside is older systems and alot of in dash units use a hideaway brain which includes a mass of wireswhich need to run back and forth between the stock radio harness and the brain
-personally my brain is mounted beneath the passenger seat with the wiring under the carpet going thru the bottom of the center console it just takes some patience to make sure everything looks nice and no showing wires....
-Until i put in my porsche seats i had an xbox under my drivers seat so i could rip music on the hard drive and listen to it with the graphic equilizer playing on the screen and play games on my lunch break, but im telling you watch yourself the first week your rocking the tv cause man is it tempting to look away from the road and id be lying if i said i didnt love tap someone on accident :-(
-if you got any more questions or need any help shoot me a pm man id be happy to help and good luck bro

I had 2 different Sony models and a Clarion before. I think we're disagreeing because you may be talking about in dash Nav/dvd systems, and I'm just talking about in dash dvd players. The OP just asked about an indash DVD player, or at least that's what I got out of it. Anyway, like I said in my first post, some models like Alpine or the Jensen one do require a bypass, and some like the avic series have the gyroscope to sense motion, but all of those are navigation. The Sony's I had were the XAV-7W, which was just a screen(no internal dvd), but still was designed to not work without the car being parked, and the other was the XAV-A1, which did have a dvd player. Both worked when grounding the parking brake wire. I can't remember the Clarion model number, but it worked the same way. Anyway, probably just a difference of thoughts with you thinking about one thing and me another, oh well.
i know of several in dash unit where you only have to ground the parking brake wire for it to work. all dual in dash set ups, all jensens, and some pioneers
