I started to get annoyed with the typical "box in the back of trunk" setup using up all my valuable trunk space and decided to experiment a bit.
My goal was to come up with something that;
-allows use of the 60/40 split seat
-access to the spare tire
-maximize trunk space
-clean, stealthy install
-economical
Here's what I managed to come up with thus far. It's basically a trapazoid box that will sit recessed in the wheel well with amps concealed in the back. It's not as pretty as Rayray's though. What do you guys think of the idea so far?
BTW- the sub enclosure won't be made of cardboard!
Driver side:
Passenger side:
Amp attached to back:
this may soun d like a stupid idea, but if u want a little show style added to it
try fiberglassing the subs into the side pannels there where your boxes are
u could actually do it so that you'd make a giant rectangle with the left over free space in the middle. It'll also look kinda cool too. As for the amp, mounting them on the back is not the best idea when it comes to heat disapation. Might i sugest mointing it to the trunk lid if u can make it strong enough or maybe upsidedown under the rear deck? I think it would look killer mounted to the trunk lid if u can do it right. I'm tempted to mount my amps there if i wasn't using such thick cable.

SMAN: I thought of going the fibreglass route, but it's too much hassle. It's not as easy as it seems if you haven't worked with 'glass b4. http://www.buildyourride.com/golfsubbox.html
As for the amp over heating...I thought of that too, but no need to worry. There's a huge air pocket of dead space back there. Further more, my amps have auxillary fans
I was also contemplating your idea of putting the amp on the trunklid too. However, I don't like the idea of suspending the amp and having to fuss with it and securing it. Here's Mach_Y's setup
looking good Phi. it's all about the planning beforehand... and the cardboard helps visualize and in determining the dimensions and amount of material you'll need. whatever happened to that guy "tmanana" with the Solara and trunk setup. remember him? that was waay back. he had a similar setup to what you're doing. i can't recall where he put his amp though.
i think i'd find another place for your amp though. in enclosed spaces where there's no renewed air it gets hot real quick. i'm thinking of getting some fans or routing some kinda laundry vent tubing to my amps cuz they're getting hot in my enclosure.
my setup was the easiest i could think of. i didn't want to go through the hassel of building my own box so i just bought some prebuilt ones. after seeing Charinee's and reading all those tutorials... i'm thinking of going the 'glass route now and getting rid of the spare (i really need access to a garage). but for now... it's all good. try not to let it sit long unfinished like i did... get it all done and over with (after proper planning of course).
I don't think you should use cardboard for the sub enclosure...those might not hold up against your JLs...oh wait...just reread your post, you're NOT using cardboard!
I like the setup with the two subs at the side, but it'd be a shame not to show off your amps and any fancy wiring. I suggest making a false floor for it, it doesn't seem too hard at all and it would look amazing! I still have that 4 to 8 gauge distribution block you gave me back in the day, you can have it back if you want to show it off (for your grounds).
If I had some matching amps, I'd definitely build a false floor for it. I think typically, you need more length in your trunk than height when hauling crap, no? i.e. skis, golf clubs, rather than big bulky boxes?
That'll look sweet, man! However I concur on the heat issue with the amp. You get less cooling on those when placed vertically than horizontally, and you're also putting it in the little nook there. However, you could probably find some way to mount like a 90mm 12V DC fan with some ducting (incorporate into the outside of the box?) that'd take care of it.
Do you have a little cubby hole under where the box is going to sit? I've got cubbys to the right and left of my spare under the interior mat. That might be another placement option if you have them.
Rayray: yeah..where'd dude go? He hit some serious Dbs with his setup.
Silver: as much as I want to showcase my beautiful matching amps, I'm tired of sacrificing my trunk space. I actually put my bicycle (quick release) in the trunk during the summers. No, I'm not getting a bike rack!
88LE: point's for using my name in a way I've never seen before. Only thing is, it's pronounced "Fee"
Brink: yeah, I do have cubby holes on either side. If you notice the back of the box, there's bit of a ledge that'll actually go into those holes.
I know heat is an amps worst enemy, but I honestly think I'll be fine. Worse case scenario, if the amps start becomign unhappy, I'll just relocate them.
As for 'glassing...maybe I'll try smaller projects first (ie. guage pods) before I tackle an entire trunk. Believe me, I'd 'glass if I was confident enough.
Thanks for the comments guys. I'll keep you posted as things develop
