10" vs 12"

i have an Alpine M450 amp, puts out 400W RMS X 1 @ 2 ohms. right now i'm running a single Alpine 10" sub in a slot vented box. im wondering will i get a lot more bass with a single 12" in a sealed box. i would probably go with another Alpine 12". jus wonderin if i'd increase bass, or will it virtually be the same?

depending on the sub but a 12'' can produce lower frequencies, volume wise won't be too much difference just bigger range I believe

having it in a sealed box will make it less loud but it can play lower frequencies. if you have it connected to the same amp, the 12 inch one you might feel a little more since there is more cone surface area. put it in a ported box and you will feel the diff. if your going to get a 12" i recommend the alpine type r. i have one in a ported box with a 650rms amp and its loud enough for me.

i was thinking about sealed, jus becuz the box wuld be smaller. but i mite go ported for more volume. if i'm going alpine, i'll def get a Type R 12". wut kind of ported box do u have? a custom built? or like a premade one from the store?

i didnt feel like custom building a ported box because its too compicated so i just baught one. i got the q logic 1.25cu ported box that can be either sealed or ported.

oh and the box isnt that big at all. it doesnt take that much space up if you shove it all the way back in the trunk.

To let you in on some info (not trying to argue, just letting you know) a sealed box is actually not much more quiet then a ported box. In many tests it has been proven to have a max increade in DB's of around 5db's which in most cases won't really be noticable.

Also sealed doesnt play lower freq... a ported box can be tuned to produce as low of freq as you want, as can a sealed... but a ported box will target that specific tuned point and make it as loud as possible. Sealed in a small box is going to go deep, but ported will always win in the low factor.

The only thing that can be said about ported is that it may make your sub sound different, which you may or may not like... in which case the Type R is a ported beast so more then likely you will like it if you like bass. And yes with around 600-700 watts the type r will be bangin. I've heard numerous times that its just loud then it is clear, but thats all in the install and the listener.

It's up to you but a 12 will more then likely be a better choice if you have the room.

In regards to your statement though,

No I don't think you will really notice too much of a difference.

I passed by my local car audio shop. i had them demo 2 boxes for me. Both JL subs in JL boxes. the first sub was a 12" W7 in a sealed box. the other was a 10" (not sure the model) in the "high-output" ported box.

the guy used the same head unit, same amp, same volume. he just swapped the wires.

based on wut i actually heard, the 10" ported box gave a lil more bass than the 12" sealed. i was a bit surprised. i thought they'd actually put out equal bass. but if you cranked up the volume, im sure they both put out good bass.

but from that lil test, a good ported box will make most subs play a lil louder.

^^ Well a box can be specifically designed for "loudness" but if your actually into your music you won't want it to be as loud as possible.

Just my 2 cents on that topic
